DeBilde23
Can someone tell me how I go about booking a Christening for my daughter? We are not active church goers but my wife would like our child to be Christened. Do I need to contact our local church or can you use any? Many Thanks. Zebra
You're supposed to ask your parish church, who might ask you to attend for a while. If you don't want to use your parish church then you have to ask their permission to use another and liase with the people at both churches about it. Then you go in have a brief appointment, set a date, talk through the service, godparents etc and you fill in a form with yours, the baby's and the godparents details and send it in. They don't charge but obviously the collection plate goes round during the service. It's fairly laid back once you know what to expect.
DeBilde23
Thanks for the info, how do I find out who is my local parish church?
cgksheff
Put your postcode in here: http://www.acny.org.uk/ ... then click on the map to see what parishes are there.
YakQueudrue
David Beckham once said he wanted to have their children christened but they hadn't decided into which religion......
Heyesey
We are not active church goers but my wife would like our child to be Christened. Hopefully, the church will turn you down flat. There's no logical reason to WANT your kids christened if you don't attend church.
Zebra
Or you could completely ignore the negative vibes (above) and consider a naming ceremony, different churches call it different things but it's sort of less serious than a Christening but still welcomes the child into the community and so on. It's very nice and it's a sort of ceremony which most parents feel is important without actually commiting their childs life to a god they might not believe in. Or just do it as a prelim until your child can choose for themselves. Either way, it's anice thing to do where your whole family can welcome the child and even if you don't attend that's ok. You can still believe but not attend church (or is that only obvious to me Heyesey). Let us know if you go ahead with it, hope it's lovely! cgksheff
Your child may find that being 'baptised' can have advantages later in life (in certain countries/circumstances), whether they are religious or not. 'Kirky' found an anglican church willing to perform a christening without jumping through hoops. Alternatively, following 'Zebra's suggestion, the Humanist Association are a formal way to have a non-religious naming ceremony: http://www.humanism.org.uk/site/cms/contentviewarticle.asp?article=1174
Rich
David Beckham once said he wanted to have their children christened but they hadn't decided into which religion...... Duh! If you have kids Christened, their religion would be Christian! Honestly these football "stars" are a bit dim sometimes... Look what "Becks" is married to for starters.
