JamesRich
Sorry, meant to say it was making a horrible grinding noise last night. Whats a PSU? How do I check the lights? I don't know much about computers Ta
sccsux
Whats a PSU? How do I check the lights? Look at the front of the PC base when you press the on button. Do you see any lights? or (if the base has transparent sides) can you see any lights inside?.
scarby
PSU - Power Supply Unit. Our PC went down, and we took it to be repaired, and it was the PSU that was the problem, got it sorted, but still sluggish as ever, needs the RAM upgrading. Sounds daft, but could it be an electrical fault in the wall socket? Or, daft again, if theres a switch on the back of the tower, maybe you turned it off there and forgot? Sorry not to be much more help, I'm not exactly an expert in this field.
Nazo
Hmmm... 'fine apart from a horrible grinding noise' is a bit different from 'fine' really. Does anything at all happen when you try to turn it on? Pretty much the only moving parts in a PC which could make such a noise are the fans, I suspect the PSU (Power Supply, where the cord plugs in) is definitely a good place to start. Theres no light, no sound, no movement, no nothing. The grinding noise sounded like the HDD struggling with something and the HDD light was constantly on. I was only playing Tiger Woods online at the time
xircon
Unplug all power cables wait 30 seconds plug back in, it may be an autosensing PSU. If this fails you will need a new PSU probably Steve
Ravenger
Could also be a duff bios battery, but most likely the PSU.
mr.blaze
You could also try resetting the BIOS.
