Anti Malaria Drug Larium - Has anyone gone crazy after taking it?

Recommended Posts

If you can afford to go to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, you can afford another £50 to protect yourself while you're there.

Taxman goes without food and clothes all year to be able to go on these merry journies :hihi: . But anyway, shell out the cash for the more expensive drugs. We don't want you any more disturbed than you already are :P .

I think Larium was even featured on Panorama or something along those lines a few years back. I personally wouldn't go anywhere near it, but you shouldn't ever consider going without malaria protection. I know someone who had it and was extremely ill for several years, and still suffers disabling relapses.

You've given me such a good idea for Taxman's birthday pressie:hihi:

"What did you get for your birthday?"

"A course of anti-malarial medication!"

Bring it round Taxman and I'll gift wrap it.

Cheers all

I'm off to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and I have been given the option of Malarone, but as you say it is expensive.

Better to part with the cash I expect than to suffer mental traumas

Lizz - Personal Nurse? I wish ;)

So its the hike up the volcano's to see the Gorillas is it? Nice. Its my next trip i think. It was that or cross country through Darfur all the way to the west coast but thats become a none starter for obvious reasons. Which travel company have you gone with?

Me and the missus were prescribed la la la la larium :loopy: and it was awful. The missus took hers a couple of days before mine, and she got rushed into A&E twice within days of taking it.

She was still suffering from taking the few pills that she had nearly 2 months later.

Avoid. I've yet to find anyone who hasn't had a funny episode with them, and dont forget, that if the airlines think you look ill, they wont let you fly. :gag:

I go with Exodus. I've used them before without any hitch and I get a frequent user discount now as well

I use Dragoman for the same reason. I've done some big trips and stay in touch with some of the drivers. It's great, after a while it becomes like private little travel club of friends. Forget Benidorm find me a rogue nation and a desert

I spent 6 months on Lariam about 3 years ago - it really does mess up your mind. The official figures claim that about 1 in 50 people are affected, but it affects everyone to a greater or lesser extent; all of my colleagues were aware that it affected them.

When you first take it you have wild bizarre dreams and wake up with the sheets wrapped round your neck – and a very annoyed partner who has removed herself to the spare room to get some sleep! That settles down, but taking the pill weekly produces a 7-day mood cycle.

All blokes should have to take Lariam for a while so they understand women more – it certainly gave me ‘PMT’ for a couple of days each time I took the tablet, and it was quite a few months after I was back home in the UK and off the stuff before I was back to normal.

The US have studied its after-effects closely, especially after they realised there was an alarming level of violence – and murder of wives – at some of their larger bases because of the effects of Lariam on their troops.

I wouldn’t take it again.
