Child seats on Bicycles

Recommended Posts

How can strapping a small child/toddler into a seat on a bicycle behind the parent be sensible/legal when motorists now have to buy a special seat to protect their small kiddies? I followed such a contraption this evening and was staggered at just how unprotected and exposed the child was. Makes no sense to me!

The child seat on a bike is to carry the child. The straps to stop them falling/climbing out.

In a car there are already seats but these are no good for small children as the seat belt tends to go across their necks instead of their chest. A boost seat makes the seat belt more comfortable and effective.

Why do you think you need a booster seat on a bike?!?

It's the idea of the seat itself that I'm uneasy about. The child in the seat perched behind his dad in the rush hour traffic looked so exposed and vunerable to any slighest mishap. Perhaps on a nice quiet rural lane it is ok but in the middle of Sheffield rush hour - I don't think so.

um hang on a minute.

I take my daughter to nursery on a child seat on my bike.

The most important point, is that we do not travel at 30/40 or 80 mph so an impact proof car seat is not required. That is why car seats have special seats.

And we use cycle lanes most of the time. And with adequate, well lit precautions, cars should give the legal distance to a bike (the same as a car).

I've taken my kids in these before and sometimes you can't avoid small stretch on a main roads. If you walk with the kids to school then you still have to deal with busy roads and there is always the risk of them running out... something that can't happen if they are strapped into a seat on a bike.

You tend to go slow with the kids on the back (as much to do with the extra weight) so accidents are easier to avoid. Don't worry, they are safer than they look!

It's just that if the bike had skidded on wet leaves or anything and slipped in under my car - what chance would the little fella have stood? It just seems crazy that this sort of thing is legal and without the need of any insurance whatsoever.

Insurance for what? To buy a new kid or wash your car?
