canuck
Hi all, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already or not. I've just signed up for Telewest broadband (my landlord already had their phone/tv so it was simply the easiest option), and they told me that as of last week they are giving out free Netgear wireless routers for customers who want them. Naturally I jumped on it; but does anyone know what model it actually is? Also, this is a dumb, dumb, question and I know it -- but I don't really understand the two different speeds and what they mean (i.e, the router has a speed of, say, 54Mbps, but the Telewest line has a speed of, say, 4Mb). Does this mean that the lines are not capable of handling all the speed the router can deliver? And if so, what is the point of getting the new more expensive 125Mbps routers -- except for intranetwork transfers (i.e,. from computer to computer within a home/office network)? fox20thc
Is this for new contracts or any customers?
canuck
I actually don't know. It is all still under my landlord's name. She had Telewest TV and Phone, but not broadband. So, in one respect she is an existing customer who is just upgrading; but in another respect she is a new broadband customer. It must be pretty new, because the guy who came to install the modem hadn't even heard about it.
altus
Can't help with what the free modem is - I suspect they are doing that because otherwise people will want them to put the internet connection in a convenient room not just where the phone/TV is. You are correct about the differences in speed. The faster connection is only really useful if you have multiple computers that you want to talk to each other. Obviously, you want your computer(s) to talk to your router at least as fast as your internet connection but not may people can get, let alone afford, internet connections faster than their local ones.
