The Great Lullaby Thread

Recommended Posts

We have a family lullaby that goes back and back, and when I sing it, I am taken right back to being curled up in my Mum's lap while she rocked in the rocking chair and sang to me. And just knowing that she sang it to me, my grandmother sang it to my father, etc, makes it even more special to me...

That tiny turned up nose

two cheeks just like a rose

so sweet from head to toes

that little boy (girl) of mine

He climbs up on my knee

he means the world to me

to me he'll always be

that little boy (girl) of mine

No-one will ever know

just what his coming has meant

he must have been heaven sent

because I love him so

that little boy of mine

As for Farmman, he sings 'It's the end of the world as we know it' to the boy, and always has since the first night we brought him home from hospital and he realised nothing was ever going to be the same again, lol.

another one I sing is

Who's got a button nose

ten little tiny toes

and a sticky out ear

who's got the sweetest smile in the world

and a face that's oh so dear

(kind of to the tune of waltzing matilda. Ish)

My lullaby and rocking song with niecelet isn't really a lullaby- it's 'Prayer to St Valentine' which is a love song instead (as recorded by Sweetmouth).

Most things that are familiar and comforting work as lullabies- I don't think the words matter much (although I had to stop singing 'Don't get married' because there's a verse about strippers- just to be on the safe side!).

My son has always been comforted by 'Rock-a-bye baby' which is strange given the lyrics.

The best song for cheering up a grumpy baby has been the theme from Rainbow:

Up above the streets and houses,

rainbow climbing high,

Everyone can see it smiling

over the sky.

Paint the whole world with a

rainbow.

All along the streams and rivers,

shining in the lakes,

See the colours of the rainbow

as the morning breaks.

Paint the whole world with a

rainbow.

doo doo doo do-doo doo doo doo do-doo etc

always guarantees a smiley baby in our house.
