Got a problem...(cat/kitten related)

A close friend has unfortunately and unexpectedly been sent to prison for 2 months. My friend has left me their house keys and asked me to look after the cats.

There are two adult cats and three kittens.

I've been driving across each day this week (Week 1 out of Week eight) to feed the cats and check on the kittens (now 3-4 weeks old), but it's a 10 mile round trip each day and becoming more and more impractical (I've got a day job and a night job and my spare hour off is being taken up doing the round trip!).

I've found homes already for two of the three kittens but I have little/no experience of cats! I'm a dog owner!

In an ideal world I could do with somewhere or someone who could home the cat family and raise the kittens for the next 7 weeks, but it would, I imagine mean keeping them inside so they dont run away. I'm also worried that the shock of moving them would mean that the mother's milk may dry up (I'm guessing that would be the case!).

Can anyone offer any help or ideas?

If you were to be careful in moving the mum and babies then everything should be just fine. Just make sure that you put the babies in the carrier first- and then the mum should follow. More than anything, she just needs a comfortable space with them where she doesn't feel pressured by other cats or dogs she doesn't know. I'd offer to take them for a while, but I've got 4 cats and that could upset her.

She'd probably be just fine in a spare bedroom in your house if it came down to it (assuming you've got somewhere that has a door that shuts properly etc), but as for the adult cats, you may be struggling with them, as they probably would take exception to being moved to a house with a dog.

BTW- if you need any help in moving them, or extra baskets for loan etc, I'm sure I can help out.

I'd love to help CR but just took delivery of a homeless hammy today. What with the other animals as well I couldn't.

A neighour tried to get me to take two kittens from her yesterday, she had just stopped someone throwing them in the Don!

Good luck, Im sure it wont be long until somebody comes along.

Unlikely to be less than 8 weeks, he has a release date of early December.

I've just been out and bought a sack of food to keep them going, it's the getting right across town every day which is the time consuming thing.

The kittens will be ready in about 3-4 weeks. They've just started crawling around, only just though.
