Question for a builder/DIY cleverclogs!

Hello,

I'm a bit of a lurker on the forum and so know you're a knowledgable bunch...

I've put an offer in on a house, but want to be able to take down the wall between the offshot kitchen (tiny) and dining room.

It looks like a load-bearing wall (thick!). Is it always possible to take down a wall (even if it's loading-bearing) as long as extra support is put in?...

I'd never be able to cook in that tiny kitchen with my toddler who is always very keen to 'help'!

Anybody done this on their own house? Any advice appreciated!

Thanks,

Suzanne

On a similar kitchen related note...

I live in a typical Sheff terraced - living room, dining room and small off shot kitchen downstairs.

We're considering turning the dining room into a kitchen/diner and using the off shot as a utility room

Has anyone done this? If so (and you don't mind me asking!) how much did it cost? How would it impact on the value of the house?

I think it would have a negative impact. Why don't you knock as much of the wall down between the kitchen and dining room so that they sort of become one. Then the whole thing looks bigger and the kitchen is still sort of separate yet more spacious. My son has just bought a house like this and it looks really good. The kitchen units on the long wall extend a few feet into the dining space so it looks integrated.

Do you have an outhouse or cellar to make into a utility room?
