Replacing a toliet cistern

My cistern is leaking from the bottom (if you pardon the expression!).

It is also generally pretty knackered looking and I suspect I will be best off replacing it rather than mending it.

So:

1. Where do I buy a replacement?

2. Approximately how much will it cost?

3. How do I know when I buy it if it will fit the pipes I have? (other than it looking quite similar to the old cistern)

1.your guess is as good as mine - it's often as cheap to buy a bog ina box from b&q than just replace the cistern

2.?? full suites cost £200 ish - a colour coded cistern for a deleted make ould cost twice as much.

3. almost certainly if its "aged" they wont fit properly.

something to do with imperial & metric changeover.however adapting the inlet & outlet shouldnt be hard.

it could be leaking from the inlet.

flush the loo, lift the ball **** to stop water gushing in. usually at the bottom is a plastic nut,try tightening it by hand.

or you could turn off the water, loosen the joint, apply PTFE tape, retighten & turn the water on.

30 minute job.

It's easy to replace mate.

Is it a side inlet cistern or an up inlet cistern?

Get replacement parts for each from B and Q.

I purchased Readers Digest DIY Manual a couple of years ago for about £25 and it's saved me easily £1000 alone in plumbing costs (that i would have paid out to a plumber).

Tells you everything how to do it from start to finish.

Can buy it from Waterstones.

Yeah £20 is about the kind of price I thought it should be considering how simple they are, but you never know with these things.

I don't doubt that I could fix the individual problem it has at the moment, but the whole contraption looks like it is about to fall apart and £20 is nowt.

I think Willman has probably answered your question. But I'll bore you with my experience.

Personally I had a lot of hassle with my cistern - I moved the thing to do some work and it ended up leaking, despite tightening everything carefully. I got fed up with it and ended up buying a new water inlet valve and fittings from Wickes, it's a relatively new design which is silent, which is a benefit.

Cistern fittings are all standard, but depend on whether the water comes in from the side or the bottom.

When I fitted mine I also used an additional washer and some sealant, but if you do use this makes sure it is completely dry before you connect to the water! Otherwise the sealant never dries, and the cistern gets filled with a mixture of water and diluted sealant. Trust me, I know this happens...

It's also a good idea to fit a little valve to the water supply, they're only a couple of quid, so that you can tinker with the cistern while the water supply is still on.
