john t
Well i know that i am very lucky in the job that i do (cival service) that i have a few options when i get to 60.! 1:- Retire with a lump sum and a weekly pension.! 2:- Take a lump sum and a pension then carry on part time.! 3:-Carry on working till i want to retire.! To be honest..i would love to say i'll take option 1..But in truth it'll probably be option No 2.!!! jt
SheShe
I have worked all my life except to take a few months off to have my children. The problem is that for most of that time I have worked part time and when I did work full time I elected to pay the "married womans stamp" I now work 30 hours a week just to keep up our standard of living. My husband has been ill for a long time so only gets the minimum pension and my contributions get me £200 and some change a month. Because I work for just above the minimum wage we don't get any help from anywhere. If I was made to retire life literally wouldn't be worth living. At least this way we can afford the little extras that make life bareable, so I really think it's up to the individual to decide when and not to be forced into it. riptony
i find it staggering that 45% of people on here honestly think the government should lower the retirement age
Cyclone
That would be people thinking about themselves and not about the larger impact. That's why we don't have referendi for most issues. Can you imagine the chaos if we had a referendum regarding taxation.
Swan_Vesta
Hasn't the state pension been abolished now for anyone who's currently below the age of about 40. Exactly. I have had the foresight to opt out of SERPS, to contribute to a private pension fund since I was 18 and to work on the basis that by the time I hit old age then the state pension will be just about worth wiping my fundament on. My long term finances look better than the majority of the populations I imagine. Consequently my retirement looks quite rosy on paper - I'm set to retire at 60 on a decent nest egg and I'm bolstering my pensions by saving for a second house to rent out meaning that I'll have an extra 120,000 in todays money when I'm an old geezer. I'm totally against working any longer than I have to, my job is a physical one and one I doubt I will be able to perform once the grey hairs out number the black. You watch, I'll have saved and plotted all my life for a healthy retirement fund for me and my spouse and I'll ****ing die at 59yrs 364 days
