The state of sheffield clubbing

Flyers are very much a concept from the 'good old days' for event and club promotion......they are now just a complete nuisance full stop. I never look at flyers anymore as they are thrust at me in town, I just refuse to take them, or if someone insists, I simply crumple and dispose of without looking at. They are dead tools for event promotion....

The way forward with marketing is txt or SMS or other electronic ways......and maybe now we can get all the millions of unread and torn up flyers off the streets as its a nightmare.....

on the contrary golden :) . i found a flyer in my jacket yesterday morning, completely forgotten about, given to me after coming out of plug last friday (which, incidentally was an excellent night). it had listings for the next month at plug, one event of which, i will now definately be going to. Flyers do work. and for me, are about the only way i get to hear of nights, apart from coming on here and trying to read posters stuck to lamposts, as i'm driving by at some speed.

Redrobbo.....which clubs/venues did the council engage in the flyering issue?

Because i can honestly say Plug have never had any discussions with the council on this issue

Also....can you advise who we need to speak to within the council regarding the new legisatation before we end up with a monopoly like the billboards again?

We desperately need to engage the council before this goes any further. We have spoken to several venues within the nighttime economy and no one has been advised/engaged etc.

I don't know the names of individual venues. I was briefed some months ago about attempts between the council and promoters/venues to resolve the issue of illegal posters and the littering issue.

So basically theres maybe half a dozen venues that cater for clubbers.
You poor wee thing. It weren't that long ago when I were a nipper, that thar wer only one club in town like. The rest were all poncy discos.

Clubs come and go. They are fashionable for a while, just like clothing and then a new club/night comes in and the clubbers move on. Music changes in fashion too, which sometimes is good for clubs and sometimes not so good. And Dance music is not the big thing it was as times have changed.

also due to lax planning restrictions, land in the centre is far more profitable as student accomadation than it could ever be with a club (anyone remember the music factory/bed?) (anyone remember the historically important bit, 'mysteriously' and 'accidently' burning down during redevelopment?)
The only bit that burned were the bits that were going to be demolished anyway. Got some nice pics inside of the firemen putting it out actually and no I didn't start it b4 anyone pipes up! :P The facade which was being kept is still there.

Lots of nights tried to make a success of the venue but none ever managed to keep it going. Even B4 all the flats started appearing.

I know from first hand experience that Sheffield Council are always looking to do everything they can to attract potential investors to the city.

a vibrant and nationally acknowledged night life attracts investment.

this is the point i think is most important and the area that sheffield council policy doesnt seem to address. no one wants the council to do promoters jobs for them, just understand that they are not nuisances but an essential part of the economy.

i agree with hustle - why dont we have cheap council sponsored advertising sites instead of rip off companies like space who only have about 3 hoardings anywhere visible. this will help solve flyering issues.

Fat Cats? What a daft thing to say in the context of this thread.

That's what people do when they are running a business - they make money. Those that don't, close.

What would you suggest as an alternative?

It's not at all daft. Some, probably most, of us promoters do it because we love music. Sure, we need to cover our costs and it's nice to have something left over, but first and foremost it's about the music.

Likewise, some club owners are in it because of the music. Yes they need to make money to stay afloat, pay the wages etc, but some of them might make a lot more money with a cheesy night for townies than with a decent, credible, underground night.

Besides, I think goldenfleece's comment was about Space advertising rather than clubs/promoters. In which case "fat cat" is an extremely appropriate term. It was used to describe the chairmen of privatised monopolies, like Cedric Brown of British gas, who gave themselves massive pay awards. Alternatives to the Space monopoly have been suggested on this thread.
