kittenta
Some one has told me that their vet recommended that they give their dog a very small amount of piriton allergy that is for humans. her dog has a problem with it's skin but not qite as bad as our sukies. Anyway i thought, a bit wierd but when mentioning it to other people they have already done it or heard of someone who does. Is this for real? Is it really safe? baileys_mum
yes its perfectly safe if you give a chlds dose. my dog got stung by a wasp and was told to give that
medusa
Many veterinary drugs are also used in humans, but you do have to be careful as some drugs used in humans are toxic to some species and vice versa (one of my cats is on 3 heart drugs which are the same drugs used in humans, but with the pills cut really small). In this instance I have heard of people recommending Piriton for dogs, but I don't know how you'd calculate the dosage, so it could be worth asking your vets' advice on that one. Strix
If you have a search for 'piriton' posts by 'Lotti', you should find a bit more info, as Takara suffered from an allergic reaction on the way home from holiday about a month ago

willman
nothing strange about that. my old dog was on human heart tablets 'cos they were cheaper than doggie ones. i still had to get them prescribed. in fact if my dogs start with the aches & pains or the odd limp i occasionally give them small doses of aspirin. our vet also advised us that codeine tablets also help with doggie trots.apparently they induce constipation. obviously you have to respect the dosages of these meds. poppylamb
Our elderly cat has a childs dose of Piriton to counteract her allergy to the tablets she has to have for her underactive thyroid gland. It took a while to get the dose right too much made her really groggy. But shes fine now:thumbsup:
bluesandtwos
We use it for our husky with hayfever in summer. you MUST check with a vet first though on dosage etc.
kittenta
I asked her vet and they said not to give it her. Didn't give a reason though
