poimaster
In a typically sheffield kinda way i was told by a friend, who was told by a friend, that they plan to demolish/quarry near/at the nine ladies stone circle. My first reation was "its a heritage site, surely its protected from that kind of thing happening" But then I thought that doesn't seem to stop developer-types who wanna build over priced flats or call centres. I hope its just a rumour but if anyone has any info if its true I'm all ears....
taxman
Sorry for my ignorance but where are the nine ladies?
40summat
To my knowledge the threat to this ancient site is is no longer, i visited often in 2000 when the area had a huge eco warrior camp spread out over the old quarry site and in the trees. They and the locals fought long and hard to oppose the plans and i beleve the site is now safe, i haven't been up lately to see if the camp has been cleared up but will probably nip over tomorow now this thread has reminded me. medusa
I'm almost certain that I saw a report on local news earlier on this year confirming that a plan which saw the necessary quarrying from other sites owned by the mining company not from this site, in order to protect the site for the future. 40summat
I found more recent articles on the courts ruling here, they are still from over a year ago though http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146412206 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/derbyshire/4103188.stm
Mathom
Check out the Modern Antiquarian : http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/1821#news I was up there last week and was having a kip (yes really, it can be deathly quiet up there, and you can watch planes flying over) by the Cork Stone at the opposite end of the Moor to the circle and then I heard all kinds of weird noise starting up and I think there's a quarry over the fence from it!
