F. Sidebottom
This chap here has a massive cat. http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=1787548 He claims that his other cat is slim so he can't understand why this one is so fat. I think he is using it as a cover up to the fact that he has overfed his ginger cat. Should this man be banned from keeping pets?
medusa
There is a phenomenon of some cats who have eating as a hobby, and sometimes it's really hard to get them out of it. I've got 4 cats, all different natural sizes, but one of which is overweight. This is partly down to her being on a prescription diet which is quite high in calories but is also partly down to her always being more motivated by food than my other cats. The other cats eat her diet too (if you'd ever tried feeding cats different diets you'd understand why it's sensible to feed them all the same if you can), and I'm always careful to offer only the amount that's recommended and make sure that they all go out for a run round regularly, but she just put on weight more than the others. Why is it that some cats overeat and others don't? I have no idea, but I'd be most offended if treating her the same way as I've treated the others were to be interpreted as cruelty. I'm sure there are circumstances when it could be interpreted as cruelty, but it would be really hard to accuse owners without full knowledge of circumstances. The other thing is- a small cat which is small framed would be overweight at 5kg, whereas I have a huge cat with very large bone structure who isn't considered overweight by my vet at 7kg. By every measure, a house cat at 12kg is grossly overweight, but there is significant variation with bone structure.
Noodle
Other people feeding your pets is also a problem. There might be some little old lady down the road from Zebedee who gives him treats.
Strix
Will I get my wrists slapped for off-topicing if I question the Star's glorification of this situation?
