Guest_225
OK, so there's to be a shake up of the various bodies looking after the countryside. This seems fair enough, but why would anyone want to base the headquarters in one of Englands cities?? I don't get it, surely it would be better situated in the countryside where the people who work there might have a better understanding of country issues. Anyone know just where it is to be based? "A new government agency for the countryside will be created when three existing organisations are merged. Natural England will take over responsibility for resource management, conservation, biodiversity, landscape, access and recreation in rural areas. From Sunday, English Nature will combine with parts of the Countryside Agency and Rural Development Service. The handover of powers takes place on Sunday and the Sheffield-based agency will be formally launched on 11 October."
cgksheff
The quote above is slightly misleading (you don't say where it is from).... NA will not have sole "responsibility for .....". It will have "responsibility for championing .........." OR "Natural England will be a new and exciting organisation with the responsibility to conserve and enhance the value and beauty of England’s natural environment and promote access, recreation and public well-being for the benefit of today’s and future generations." Don't say where the offices (about 25-30 permanent staff) will be, but: http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/ruraldelivery/natural-england.htm http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2005/050623a.htm The board: http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2006/060426c.htm Comment from the new Director: http://society.guardian.co.uk/societyguardian/story/0,,1865235,00.html Strategy Brochure: http://www.english-nature.org.uk/About/pdf/NEStrategyDoc.pdf
Guest_225
The quote above is slightly wrong (you don't say where it is from).... It's from this article on the BBC news site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/5393330.stm I did a search and found the address of the Natural England office, i still maintain it would be better situated actually in the countryside - Natural England 1 High Street East Parade Sheffield S1 2ET
max
Makes sense to have a national office in a major city. Particularly Sheffield, as it it's in the middle of the country with easy access by rail or road. Site it in the country and you'd force people to use their cars as most country locations only have linear access, viz. one bus in and one out. Plus, if it brings jobs and money into Sheffield, hurrah say I.

Heyesey
No doubt they will be discussing how to bring jobs and amenities back to the countryside...... Jobs and facilities for OTHER people; not *us*, we're important and shouldn't have to fart about trying to get to some backwoods middle-of-nowhere place that nobody cares about. Don't you just love quangos...
