From the late 50's to the early sixties Mr Briggs and his converted old single decker bus, converted into one of the first mobile shops in rain and snow used to serve the residents of Hackenthorpe, long before the shop at the bus terminus (Garlic @ Russell opened).

His Shop had everything, and in those days he had a book for tick until pay day.

He used to cover Rainbow Drive, Delves Drive , Deves Road etc. Whatever happend to him and his shop. I would like to know:help:

I remember the mobile shop. It used to park outside our house on Delves road, and me and my sister used to spend 3d (threeepence to you youngsters) every Saturday on sweets.

We also always bought our vegetables and pop for the week off the shop.

Vaguely remember the mobile shop but remember Elams newsagents long before the row of shops on Birley Spa Lane were built.

Mr Elam was O.K.

He transferred his business into the shops when they were built and if I'm not mistaken (I probably am though  ) the present newsagents is in the same shop.

Hi Richard21,

Elams was the centre of schooll Kids for sweets at dinner time. I got caught taking a packet of Spangles and Mr. Elam asked me for my name and address, in those day's we told the truth. He said he would come and see my Dad that night, I sat up untill 10.30 that night in total panic, Mr. Elam did not arrive. The next morning I told my Dad what had happened, I got a clip round the ear then he threw half a crown at me when I asked why he said the clip was for bieng stupid and the half a crown was for having the guts to admitt it.

Those were the days which sadly we do not subscribe to today.

Best Regards

I used to have a paper round at Harry Elam's when he moved from the wooden hut he had next to the bus stop just up from the shops. I'm pretty sure that he and his missus both worked in there. Mornings, evenings plus the Green Un on Saturday nights. My schoolmate Peter Aythorne put me on to the paper round. Can't remember how much we got payed but he seemed a reasonable bloke. later on Harry employed a guy in his shop to do all the early morning prep work....can't remember his name but I used to get him out of bed on many an occasion!
