I think it would be very interesting to Know why some of you left Sheffield.

What started the idea of moving - was it job related or just a wonder lust ?

I have lived in Sheffield for most of my life although when starting to holiday abroad I must say I had a great fancy for Greece but was then to old to be a beach bum or a back packer. I'm sure there are some very interesting stories to be told.

I left Sheffield when I was 19 in 1975,my brother had married a blackpool girl in 1972 and he moved over to the fylde coast in1974,he wanted my mum and me to join him but it took mum a year to talk me into leaving,I missed Sheffield terribly at first but didnt return for personal reasons,as its turned out I now prefer living in a small town but miss the glorious surrounding countryside still.:)

I left in 1990 to come to Perth when I was 18 because nearly everyone I knew was on the Y.T.S. or unemployed I wanted a better chance of having a full time job at the stage and warmer weather than what was being had in Middlewood at the time. Now I have been living in Perth 16 years and it only still feels like yesterday because every day here is almost like a holiday winter day around 15 degrees and summer day they are in the 40's

Left in 1951 for two reasons. First, my wife and I decided we couldn’t live together. Second, Sheffield only had two newspapers (three if I include the weekly) all owned by Kemsley. Manchester had all the dailies and two evenings so I headed for Manchester and been here since 1951.

My longing as a child, to live in a warmer climate & on the coast came to fruition in 1970 when we came to Australia with our 2 kids, we were sent to Wollongong by mistake, I wanted to stay in Sydney.

As we came over the hill from Sydney and I saw the Gong for the first time with it's beautiful beaches etc, I decided to stay, there was plenty of work in the steelworks, mines etc, so finding a job wasn't hard, 36 years later, we are still here.

Nowadays we have the highest unemployment rate in Oz, but finding work has never been a problem for our kids, being so far from family & friends made me very homesick for years, after visiting Sheffield in 92 I realised we had made a good move and I have never looked back since.

I left in 1977 to be near my new business Garage at Chapeltown.I moved away from Heeley when it had to be pulled down & moved to the Manor for a couple of years & have been in breadcake land for 29 years but I'm still a De- Da & proud to be.
