I need to knit something! Help...

in the day I spin, in the evening I like to knit.

I'm finding myself starting bits and then not going back to them, I think I need a little structure in my knitting, so I want a pattern (gasp)

I've got 200g Debbie Bliss Merino Chunky in a dark green colour, and 200g Merino Aran in a mustard colour.

I want to make something with them....

Preferably not a bag/scarf/cushion, but it also has to be quite a simple to follow pattern.

I was thinking about those lovely gloves you've all just made. but they looked tricksy.

:help:

I'd recommend the Fetching gloves as a perfect introduction to knitting in the round with DPNs, if you'd like to give that a go. The yarn is much thicker than traditional sock yarn - which is what you usually start with when knitting with DPNs - so not only do they knit up quickly, they're excellent for getting used to the DPNs.

Several of us have done them too, so there will be lots of advice to be had if you get stuck. Look at the Fetching knitalong thread for a link to the pattern :) .

Although the cables look tricky, they're really not - honest!

It's not the cables that worry me really.

I've been using the DPN's for a few things, but for some reason I can't seem to totally get rid of a little gap forming between the first stitch and the last titch on every row, it's just a bit 'gappier' than the rest.

I might have a go at them, i've got enough yarn

Ah, well you need to seek out the 'Hecate's guide to knitting socks on DPNs' post :D . There's a couple of tricks in there for getting rid of the dreaded laddering. It's more difficult to avoid when the first stitch on the needle is a purl, but otherwise it's possible to get rid of the little gap just about completely.

One more thing,

In the pattern it says use 4mm DPN's and the yarn is cashmerino.

I've got merino chunky, and i'm using 5mm DPN's

Will this make a massive difference?

Or will I end up wearing them as leg warmers?

Would you need to do is do a test swatch for gauge. You'd need to alter the needle size until you got the gauge specified in the pattern. The trouble is that although you may end up with the correct gauge, if the yarn is significantly different from that used by the designer, then you might not get the best result in terms of texture and fit (the fabric might end up too stiff or too loose).

Could you not use the mustard merino aran for Fetching?

I could but i'm already on my 3rd row

I'll probably regret it but i'll just carry on and see what happens.

My dads got big hands anyhow, and christmas is coming

Good grief, that was quick! Let us know how you get on. Resurrect the Fetching knitalong thread if you get into it; it'll give me the impetus to buy the yarn for the third pair at the weekend.

i've just checked and the DPN's im using are 6's  serves me right for starting something new gone midnight.

I'll start them tomorrow with the aran like you say, it is slightly finer, but it still says 5mm on them.

And i'll be a good girl and do a swatch first.

thanks for your help.

If you want a ball of this to make some more I can give you one?

I think in the pattern it says that smaller needles are used with the Debbie Bliss Aran than recommended on the ball band so as to give the slightly thicker texture required for nice warm gloves. I don't have the pattern to hand though, so I might be thinking of something else.

Thanks very much for the yarn offer, but I've just been browsing the Get Knitted site and I have my eye on a denim blue colour. What's the betting that John Lewis doesn't have it in stock?
