What does it take to become a nurse?

nah not in writing but over the telephone it took me ages to find out that i wasn't successful!

Yes i found out that if i went to sheffield i would have to have experince with some kind of care!

But if tehy are really that desperate for nurses why are they making all these hurdles for people to jump over??

Hi I am a student nurse and I qualify in April. Unfortunately at the moment all over the UK there is a shortage of nursing jobs so I will most probably be unemployed when I qualify. There was a huge shortage if nurses a few years ago and they did a lot of work to recruit new students, resulting in there now being too many students to fill the jobs and also there is not enough funding in the NHS to replace staff who leave or retire etc!

They cant not give you a place on the course just because you dont read the nursing times, thats ridiculous. There may have been other factors such as you not having the qualifications they wanted or not having enough experience. Even if you have experience and qualifications, you will have been up against hundreds more people trying to get on the course who may have had more experience than you.

The universities have cracked down on accepting poeple with experiance over those who havent due to the numbers of people thinking they wanted to be a nurse, applying, getting a place and then realising it wasnt for them on their first work placement and quitting, wasting a place that somebody who really wanted to do it could have had.

Dont give up though and try again. Get yourself a support workers job in a local hospital or home or do some volunteering in the mean time to show them you are really interested in being a nurse. The fact that you apply again even after being turned down will look good for you as it will show you are determined to be a nurse!

Good luck, Im sure you will be ok x

like all courses there are only so many places, my girlfriend is just about to qualify after studing for 3 years in sheffield. it is recommended that before you apply you get some kind of working experience. she used to do home care for the elderly 2 nights a week on top of her full-time job (office work)for about 8 months before applying. they have to be strict that you tick all the boxes when applying, i cant remember what the cost is per nurse for compleating a 3 year programme but its in the region of £80'000k. trust me its hard work having seen what they go through. then to finish it off they are cutting jobs.

where would we be without our nurses!!

What does it take to be a nurse?

Speaking from experience,

Infinite patience...

Caring manner...

An ability to put up with starvation wages, long, long hours, bad conditions, abuse from some patients, unsocial hours, and being dropped on from a great height by those above you.

yes but if they expect experience and qualifications shouldn't they raise the minimum age for the job. you can be 17 1/2 when you have your interview, how did they expect me to have experince at that age?

and if there was more reasons than the nursing times why didn't they tell me, i am sure it would have benefited me more than using that excuse?

Same as police really, people want more policing around but there isnt enough police to do this, but then again there are plenty of people out there who would be good enough to be a member of teh police but the tests are so hard that most of them wouldn't pass!

I'm afraid this isn't true at all, the policing problems are far deeper. They have in fact recently lowered the standards required for several of the tests, and are very heavily over subscribed with applicants. It's about funding and places as opposed to your actual aptitude for the job.

Twiglet, Have you thought about going in at Clinical Support Worker level? Working on the wards you will gain nursing experience and build up your qualifications which hopefully could lead you on to a career in nursing later. Check out Sheffield Teaching Hospitals website as I think they hold Open Days for people interested in CSW posts or 'phone 2265919 for further details.
