kimmie
People say that the NHS is crying out for nurses, but they don't accept you on courses for stupid reasons! I applied to Birmingham University to go on a Nursing Course which eventually would have given me the qualification of a adult nurse! Unfortunatley i didn't get on the course, the reason was because i didn't read the Nursing Times Magazine! I didn't even know they had one, so how could i read it! SO what can you do to become a nurse?

Jabberwocky
When i trained in the 90s there was something called Project 2000, they accepted anyone and if your basic qualifications werent up to scratch they made sure that you got the adequate ones to start training. Ok so it added time to the length of the course, but it helped a lot of people who would otherwise have failed at the first fence. Im surprised they used the nursing times as a reason not to admit you, thats really wierd.
SL31
Start out by doing some volunteer work in old peoples homes etc, I was thinking about it years ago and my mum who worked in a hospital spoke to the nurses and they said they probably wouldnt accept me on a course unless I had done a few months volunteer work. Cyclone
the reason was because i didn't read the Nursing Times Magazine! They gave you that as a reason? In writing? Take it to the press, make them look like idiots.
kimmie
nah not in writing but over the telephone it took me ages to find out that i wasn't successful! Yes i found out that if i went to sheffield i would have to have experince with some kind of care! But if tehy are really that desperate for nurses why are they making all these hurdles for people to jump over??
kimmie
Same as police really, people want more policing around but there isnt enough police to do this, but then again there are plenty of people out there who would be good enough to be a member of teh police but the tests are so hard that most of them wouldn't pass! Cyclone
If they can't pass the tests, then what makes you think that they'd be a good police officer? Going back to the point, I wonder if someone just made up some nonesense to get rid of you? It sounds like a rather stupid reason to give.

Here are some sample questions from the maths elemnt of the police entrance test:- 72 - 27 = (36 / 3) + 6 = Looks like they expect genius level entrance. scoop
But if tehy are really that desperate for nurses why are they making all these hurdles for people to jump over?? Unfortunatly nobody is that desperate for nurses at the moment. Due to the current financial crisis in the NHS, many trusts have put a freeze on recruitment. Staffing levels are being run down to an absolute bare minimum. I forget the exact figures but it was definatly more than 50% of nursing graduates were expected to be unable to find work as nurses this year. The universities obviously have to reflect this in the number of places they have on their courses, so there are probably fewer courses with just as many applicants, so you're just unlucky to be applying at this time I would have thought.
