Tips on promoting a new forum/website?

hermes

Recommended Posts

afternoon all..

i'm thinking of starting a forum (don't worry - nothing to do with sheffield, so this place can rest easy ;) )..

i have the basic site and infrastructure in place, and a few people have signed up so i can test various aspects.. it all seems fairly solid at the moment, so i want to index it on Google and start to raise its profile..

has any got any tips for doing this, or can point me in the right direction? also, anything i should bear in mind when unveiling a project such as this?

thanks :)

Have a read of Google's Webmaster Help Center

yeah, i've been reading them.. i was thinking more along the lines of "real world" tips - the sort of thing that comes with experience, rather than documented/bureaucratic advice..

for example - recommendations for increasing the exposure of links to my site.. i could stick link in my sheffield forum sig, i could put a link on my myspace profile, but beyond that what is a good way to have my site linked on a lot of pages, thus boosting the google rankings?

i'm not talking about underhand tactics or anything.. just legitimate things i should consider that i other people have found useful :)

Get a few people interested in your forum, if it is well run and of interest to people it will be used and word will spread.

Grinder

yeah, i only unleashed it last week and already it has over a dozen members and daily posts (i know that sounds really poor, but i'm impressed lol).. it is based on a regional community, much like this, so i have every faith that it will draw a reasonable crowd :)

i was just wondering if there are any specific tips people might have - particularly anyone who might have been around during the conception of this place? a few people have linked to it from myspace, faceparty, etc. but i figured there would be some good promotional activities that i had overlooked..

It's very time consuming, but you just have to trawl the internet for sites prepared to exchange links with you.

Lots of sites have a "Links Page" and are prepared to exchange links...often referred to as reciprical links.

Most sites expect you to provide a link to them first.

Provide a link to them...then email the webmaster asking for a reciprocal link.

It helps if you search for websites on the same subject......in my case anything camping related such as campsites, camping equipment suppliers, manufacturers etc.

That said......getting links out there is only part of the problem.

Getting a high ranking on Google for instance takes time and effort.

Definately read the Webmasters Help Centre.

If anyone has a magic answer to this.....please let me know, lol.:)

that's fine, i'm perfectly happy to put the time in :)

good advice, thanks.. there are plenty of sites from my home town, so i'll see if they fancy linking me.. hell, even my home-town local paper might like to link me - i'm sure that would be decent exposure!

Wikipedia is a good site to add yourself too on the relevant interest page.

this is an absolutely sterling idea! i know wikipedia frowns upon shameless self promotion, but i think a website devoted to a particular town is perfectly at home within the relevant interest page, regardless of current subscriber base..

thanks :)
