"Mayday" Re Wireless broadband

Help! I have Tiscali broadband and it all works fine through the normal modem and connection, but last night I bought a Netgear wireless router and Wireless USB connector, I followed all of the intructions as best I could but it just would not work the screen said I had a good connection and the little icon turned green but the USB light was flashing and not a solid light which meant it was searching for a connection and I couldnt get online. The instructions for the USB and the Router came seperate so I didnt know which to install first so I kind of mixed and matched and I do think its a user fault rather than dodgy equipment. Any techies out there give me a helping hand or point me in the right direction, I am going to un-install and start again but before I do I want any help and advice before a chuck the thing at a wall    Thanks in advance.

:( are you sure the router plugs in to the usb & not an ethernet port?.try typing 192,168.254.254 in your browser this might get you into the routers console, where you can enter your tiscali logon & password-then connect. i think most routers are fire walled these days & it might be this that locking you out.hope this helps, willo.

Sounds to me like your router is not 'dialing' your ISP and is not connected. You have to tell it what to dial and the protocols it has to use.

If the wireless is enabled on the router and your USB stick has been installed correctly, it will show you a connection but not to your ISP, just to the router.

Don't know exactly what 'home page' URL is for Netgear but try typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.1.1 in to your web browser. This should take you to the setup program for the router.

What does it say in 'Internet settings' or similar?

Also connect with a cable untill it is set up properly

I am actually on line from work at the moment and my poor girlfriend is pulling her hair out trying to work it out, it feels like we have exhausted every avenue yet it still wont work. I think the Router is connected to Broadband ok as my Mobile phone picks up the wifi in my house when the router is connected, so I think the problems lies either between the USB and the router or on the PC itself, its got to the stage now where I have tried so many different things that I dont even know where I am anymore, I might just send the sodding thing back and buy about 10 meters of extension broadband cable. For info the router is "Netgear RangeMax Wireless ADSL Modem/Router DG834PN" and the USB is "Netgear RangeMax Wireless USB Adaptor". bogof in Argos ;)

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834PN.asp

Is a good place to start.

The Address is 192.168.0.1 for a DG834PN. Start with network cable plugged in to pc/router. Follow supplied instructions also at

http://documentation.netgear.com/dg834pn/enu/208-10019-01/

Type 192.168.0.1 into your browser and press enter and check all the settings on the netgear page that comes up - if the page doesn't come up - you may have a faulty network card in your PC or its not been wired in and you have a blank port. This page is independant of broadband - it is stored on the router locally, if you can't get this page up shout!!

Get this PC working first!!! Whilst still connected via network cable. Do not even bother with any other PC till you get an internet connection on the first PC, then move onto the next PC and install the drivers before putting the dongle in (common mistake for all usb hardware is to plug in first - never do it.).

I have had problems with (not with netgear but with Maplins ) dongles - on my sisters pc the driver would not install and hung the PC and I had to roll it back - I got around it by hard cabling her PC in.

Cheers for the info! But my girlfriend has packed it up ordered 20m of adsl cable and is ready to take it back to argos for a refund. I will ask her to try the above but might end up in A & E.

Thanks Again.

I've never had much luck with networking over USB.

Yes, i've found them to be far less reliable than PCMCIA solutions.

Danny_Boy - it should be quite straight forward to setup your wireless network (assuming that USB stick is working ok)... just follow Xircon's guidance and read the manual of your router!! :)
