CockneyMafia
People often discuss the law and how they would change certain things if they had the power to. So, assuming you ever had the power to, what one law would you change or introduce tomorrow?
Cyclone
I would repeal the legislation that lets parliament force a bill through the house of lords despite being rejected by that house. It leaves the entire system open to abuse by a strong government (as I think we've seen in the last 2 labour terms) and removes a crucial check on the power of parliament. LordChaverly
But as the House of Lords is packed with unelected and unrepresentative placemen (and women), would this necessarily be an improvement? Surely a better solution would be to strengthen the powers of the Commons, vis a vis the Executive, and abolish the Lords altogether.
KenH
This will sound very petty! One of the things which annoys me are competitions where, by law, they have to provide a test of skill or knowedge. For example, they ask 3 questions and then a winner is selected at random from those getting the question right. The idea of the law was that they couldn't just hold a lottery, so they had to ask questions. At them moment we have shows where you pay 50p/£1+ to call in and the questions are inane and so it really is a lottery (for example, what is the capital of England a) London b) Paris c) Brick). I would change the law so they have to ask hard questions, although a lawyer may have to phrase it better than that.
muddycoffee
I would legalise hard drugs and sell them at high street chemist shops. This would 1) Wipe out 90% of house break ins 2) Cut off most of the income from drugs dealers pushers and national and international crime gangs. 3) Reduce the spread of serious conditions like HIV and Hepititus, which is regularly caused by the sharing of drugs paraphanalia like syringes etc.. 4) Seriously affect the financial income of international terrorists who rely on poppy harvests to supply opium 5) Prevent drug users from overdoses, gangrene etc.. caused by irratic and unreliable quality drugs 6) Stop pushers from moving people onto harder drugs to increase dependence and profit, leading to a reduction in drug misuse. 7) Bring all drug users into contact with professionals who can give them help and advice about reducing or quitting. Reduce the cost of policing at customs and the need for so many drugs squads in the police. 9) Generate tax income for the treasury

I wasn't allowed 2 changes, so I couldn't also make the HoL an elected body.

I would make exaggerating, getting hysterical and making OTT analogies illegal.
CockneyMafia
I would replace dole money with vouchers for food/travel/heating etc. Sales of scratchcards and Superkings would plummet, but its a small price to pay for knowing that the money is being spent on more appropriate services and goods. Am not sure if this is a policy rather than a law change, but I'll run with it. I would like a law passed that allowed big brother contestants to be shot on sight, but I might struggle to get this one through. I stress 'might' though.
