getatrowel
By now I am sure everyone has heard about Richard Hammond's 280mph crash last week, and subsequent rescue by the http://www.yorkshireairambulance.org.uk/ Shortly after the crash was announced, members of the http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/default.asp?h=0 were looking for a way to send their best wishes to Richard and his family. At first flowers were considered, but then someone came up with the idea of raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance - with an initial goal of £340 to cover the cost of the flight. Roll on a few days and the fund was into the thousands. There was a plan to redirect donations after 10:00 on Monday to all Air Ambulances in the UK, but in light of the family's wishes all donations are going to continue going to the YAA. So far today the total stands at £159,984.00 and the YAA have recently announced plans to use the donations to fund a second chopper to be based in South Yorkshire. Air Ambulances, like the RNLI, are funded entirely by donations. If you would like to make a donation, you can donate to the Richard Hammond / Yorkshire air ambulance appeal: http://www.justgiving.com/PHRichardHammond Alternatively if you wish you can find your local air ambulance: http://www.airambulancecharities.co.uk/find_your_air_ambulance.html - which for a lot of the people here will be the YAA, though those from the wrong side of the Pennines are covered by the http://www.northwestairambulance.co.uk/ Feel free to spread this information if you wish. KenH
I am sure it is a very good cause, provided you live in Leeds. In fact, it should really be the "Leeds Air Ambulance".
Knoxville
I am sure it is a very good cause, provided you live in Leeds. In fact, it should really be the "Leeds Air Ambulance". They must have been lost when they picked up my friend in the Peak in that case.

pumatic
And very lost picking Richard Hammond up in York. What a weird thing to say. Plus they are intending, if possible, to use the money to set up another helicopter unit, based in South Yorkshire. (And called 'Hammy's Heli')
KenH
And very lost picking Richard Hammond up in York. What a weird thing to say. The accident wasn't at York, it was at Elvington. The Helicopter is based at Leeds Bradford Airport which is north of leeds. We are based in Sheffield, which is nowhere near Leeds. In the event that there is a terrible accident in Leeds City then they can send the air ambulance. In the event that there is an accident in Sheffield city then you get an ordinary ambulance. From where I live in Sheffield to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance base is 37 miles. As well as the Leeds Air Ambulance, there is also a Notts/Lincs Air ambulance which is located 36 miles from my house. The is also a county air ambulance based at East Mids which is 35 miles from my house. What we need is a Sheffield/South Yorks air ambulance not a Leeds air ambulance.
