Do you do more than your Job Description?

I was wondering how many of you out there have job descriptions that don't list all the tasks you do?

 

Since a manager left I have been doing more responsible tasks, when the new manager came they did not pick up these tasks.

 

I have brought this to the attention of the new manager listing all the differences and I asked for a re-grade.

 

My new manager now has to ask her manager but because she holds the budget I already know the answer.

 

Should I join a union and take this further? Should I refuse to do the tasks not on my JD. I don't want to cause bad feeling but I hate being put on, I just want some recognition of the role I do.

 

Any ideas anyone, short of leaving (which I've been trying to do for ages but need these hours for childcare reasons).

In my last job, which was Working for NCP in Leicester collecting cash from machines in various nearby towns and cities, the supervisor left and they asked me to take up the position with a strong possibility of further promotions in the future. I refused, mainly because Im a feckless layabout but even so, I ended up doing the job without the salary. I didnt mind because I loved the job.

It depends on how ornerous the tasks are and how much you enjoy your job.

It might not look like it, but the management DO watch you and everything you do goes towards your cudos with them. It might be good for you in the future if you intend to stay at that job.

Job descriptions are rarely an accurate reflection of what people actually do, or of the time and effort required to perform specific tasks.

I agree, those above you tend to watch and appreciate. I always did much more than my job description and my career and salary advanced each year. I did it because I loved the job and more or less volunteered for everything, but to those above me I was ‘dedicated’. Also got a lot more money than I expected when I retired!

All depends on your manager and when they hold the budget all they think about is money, money, money and rarely reward you for doing over and above what you do, it just seems to be expected these days.

 

Thye meanwhile look after themselves and always make sure they're paid for what they do and are quick to point out when it's not their role, makes me sick.

If you're paid a wage, you should work for it rather than displaying a jobsworth shop steward attitude when you're actually asked to do something.

 

Employees should be happy to do any reasonable task that their employer - who pays them for goodness' sake - asks.
