chrisp7091
You can get pre stretched canvas from Hobbycraft at the retail park near Carbrook. Is that the kind of thing you're after?.
purdyamos
Decent art shops should sell canvas off the roll, and have a variety of types - it depends on the texture and closeness of weave you want. It is a pain stretching your own canvases, and you need to prime the raw fabric when you've stretched it, with gesso. That's all without thinking about making a frame! Ready made canvases are much easier. Pinders on Charter Row, Hobbycraft, Artscene on Chesterfirld Road are your best bets, though. The Works on The Moor has good cheap canvases, some very big. JillieT
It depends on what size you're looking for 4ny1ne ... the biggest box ones i get are from The Works. They're about 3ft by 3ft n cheapest place to get them from. Any bigger and I make them. 2 by 1 with strengtheners and those wiggly nail thingys to join the corners - eeeeeh not very technical but who cares lol I'd say that for me the best canvas is the untreated - only cos the treated stuff splits as you're stretching it, well it does on me anyway. And get some of those stretching clamps cos they work and saves you getting cramp in your fingers. I don't always use gesso tbh, diluted emulsion in two coats does the same. Biggest I've done is 5ft by 7.5ft so it's not that much of a pain to do. oh n I forgot to say that I got my canvas from ebay - german factory .... dirt cheap even with delivery was much cheaper than here n i came in 3 days will send you the shop link if you want to take a look.
