scott488
Hi ya all, I'm researching my family tree and have found out that my grandfather was born in 3 Court, Broughton Lane. I'm trying to find out what kind of life he had so any kind of information about this area from the 1920's would be great. I've driven down Broughton lane and the place doesnt seem to exist any longer and I cant find out anything about the place. Any pointers in where i should be looking would also be great. Thanks

rubydazzler
I'm researching my family tree and have found out that my grandfather was born in 3 Court, Broughton Lane. I'm trying to find out what kind of life he had so any kind of information about this area from the 1920's would be great. *Court* Houses were usually the houses built at the rear of other houses. For instance on a street, there might be large yards with terraced houses built around them. The ones facing onto the street were just numbered 1, 3, 5, etc as usual. The ones at the back, reached by going down a passage. were numbered 1 Court, 3 Court etc. So if you lived in the first house in the second court, your address would be 1 Court 2 ... get it? They might even have been "backtoback" houses in those days as well. So your grandfather would probably have been living in the second yard with court houses along Broughton Lane on the left hand side going towards the city centre. As the odd numbers are usually on the left hand of a street pointing to the City centre. Most of these types of dwellings were either demolished by the Luftwaffe in the Blitz, or the Council finished the job in the 60s and 70s

Thanks hello Scott, Number 3 Broughton Lane would have been more or less opposite to where the KFC Drive in is now , the court yard was at the back of some shops ( I seem to remember one was a cycle shop possibly "James Cycles" ) and next to what was a pub called the Broughton Inn , which was on the corner of Attercliffe common and Broughton Lane. You may be able to see more pictures at the Central Library ,where they have a bigger database than the on-line facility. good luck in your search deecee
scott488
Thanks guys, all very interesting. I live in Doncaster now but still work in Sheffield, in fact near to Broughton lane. I think i'll have to have a trip down on one of my days off to try and find maybe a map or some old photo's. Got the one that was suggested, gives me an idea of what i'm looking for.
