Fareast
A government document [Public Bodies Directory] was released without publicity about 2 weeks ago.The subject was Quangos, about 900 of them.Apparently the cost of these bodies is now 123 billion pounds a year.In the past 2 years the cost went up by 40 billion pounds. Mr. Dan Lewis, Head of Research of The Economic Research Council remarked, " These figures are a disgrace.........spending out of control.......40 billion is more than our total annual military expenditure." Strangely enough, when he was in opposition, Our Glorious Leader, T.Blair, promised to confine the Rule by Quango, " to the dustbin ". Well, he's probably just forgotten. Anyway, 123 billion pounds is not a lot of taxpayers' money when you divide it by the number of taxpayers. Is it ?
Tony
How else do you keep all those civil servants busy now that there are double the number that there were under Conservative? After all, it's only taxpayers money.
KenH
When discussing such bodies it is worth rememberring a few facts. The BBC is a qango. This spends such a vast amount of money that you shouldn't be shocked by large numbers for qangos as a whole. The qango's that have most affected Sheffield were not set up under the Labour government, such as the Student Games or the Airport qangos. The trouble is that the same people who made a terrible mass of those two things, then moved onto other qangos that continue to blight the city. Hels
The Government paying people to do some work - what's wrong with that? Better than paying people not to work (Jobseekers allowance) isn't it?
upholder
The Government paying people to do some work - what's wrong with that? Because it doesn't create wealth, rather the opposite.
Gadgetgirl
I'm sure there's a few got quite rich off this qangos, so therefore they do create wealth *cough* for a few.
