Siren   10 #13 Posted July 13, 2018 The original St Elisabeths was on a triangular piece of land bound by Queens Rd,Duchess Rd and Farm Rd. The building itself was almost on the exact spot as the old Heartbeat night club. Its on the 1892 to 1914 25 inch OS map.
 Share this content via...

broncolives   10 #15 Posted July 13, 2018 As a 16year old apprentice plumber I worked for Thomas Wilkinson. We did a big renovation job at St Elizabeths (known as the little sisters of the poor)  I almost burned the place down when the safety valve on my petrol blowlamp sent a stream of petrol around the room and set on fire. happy Days. I think it was the convent that was on Heeley Bank Road which I remember as a large red brick building with railings around the perimeter. broncolives   10 #18 Posted July 14, 2018 The building was split into three areas. The area nearest the bottm of the road was for elderly men. The top area of the building was for the elderly women and in the middle was the convent. In effect it was an old peoples home. The sisters cared for the reidents and they were well looked after from what I saw. The sisieter used to get funds by having a flag day once a year in town. They would sell small paper lapel badges which had the picture of a horse drawn carriage on them. The only down side i observed was the fact that the building always smelled of boiled cabbage. I believe there was well situated just outside the main door(s) into the building, think it can be seen on some of the old photos, but recalling what others have said it was an ornamental well that was placed for visitors to make donations to the trust, bit like a wishing well. I am in no way stating that there was never a real functioning well within the grounds, but I have not seen any marked on any of the old maps I have access to.
 Share this content via...
