Am I allowed to do this?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I live in a council house and am wanting to take the current gas fire out (typical looking council gas fire) and replace it with either another gas fire or an electric one. I have 3 questions.

1. Am I able to take the current one out as its a council property?

2. What type of workman would I need be to take it out and replace it with another one and a fire surround?

3. Would that same workman be able to fit an electric fire and fire surround or would I need another type of workman to do that?

I am clueless...pls help

Can only answer the first question and to tell you i did it without asking, it was disgusting, the fireplace came out halfway into my living room using beautiful breeze blocks :loopy: anyway there was no way it was staying in my flat so out it came, i didn't even replace it with another fire, just had a gorgeous surround with tiles but in. Oh i did keep the original fire though, kept it in the outhouse in case they wanted to put it back, be warned if you don't keep it, you will probably have to replace it if you want to take your fire with you if you leave the property.

Hi

As far as I know you need to inform your area housing office of your intention

to remove the gas fire and..

You have to use a corgi registered gas fitter, who will give you the certificate saying it has been fitted by him/her to the required standard.

Why not ring the council and ask ?

Isn't your place being refurbed as part of the Decent Homes plan anyway? Ring the council and discuss it - it may need replacing anyway.

It's already been done last year but they never replaced the fire. New kitchen/bathroom, central heating added/double glazed windows. Wall and gates outside at front but still left with a horrible looking fire

There's no problem with taking out the fire, provided you leave the gas pipes in position so a future tenant can put one back in. (After all, if the fire was condemned by a technician, you'd HAVE to remove it whether the council like it or not.)

If you want a surround for your electric fire, I'd advise a movable, stand-alone one; anything built in to the property might be in breach of your lease.

No you wouldn't :suspect: It would just be illegal to use it, and there'd be a tag attached to it to tell everybody so
