Guest
Hi, I was wondering, I'd fancy learning - professionally - an old handicraft, but I am not quite sure what, it's just, I love working with my hands and create things and you hear so much about crafts becoming extinct... Does anybody know anyone/anywhere in the Sheffield area who is interested in passing on their skills? Please let me know if you know anything/anybody - tips and suggestions would be very welcome! Thanks, Nickel

Guest
Does anybody do crochetting? I used to do that a few years ago. We have a fair few crocheters in the knitting group. The group is open to any and all members of the Sheffield Forum who have an interest in knitting, crochet or any other of the textile arts. Feel free to drop in any time . I've just started courses in metalwork/jewellery design and pottery, amongst other things. There's something very satisfying about making something with your hands, especially when there's a skill to be learned along the way. I fancy having a go at enamelling next, and in the textile world I'm going to be moving on to spinning (when I get a minute!) .

Sultana
How about lace making (is it called tatting?)
samc
I worked with someone who took up lace making. Took her months to make a bookmark but it was pretty.
Agent Orange
I saw that they were doing wood sculpturing up at Abbeydale Woods (?). Might be interesting creating things out of old trunks of trees etc.
Hopman
I suspect that there are few places these days that make dwiles fpr use in dwile flonking - now there's a sport for the Olympics!
Plain Talker
Sultana, There is lacemaking, which uses a large number of bobbins, to make items in lace, and there is also a craft called tatting, which does make a lace of sorts, but it's more like crocheting, as it tends to only use one "bobbin" or "spool" at a time. SL31
What about blacksmithing or silversmithing, i did my Art & Design, Crafts at University and we covered metal, woodwork, ceramics, textiles and glass. Woodwork consisted of making a basic stool which was great fun. Metal work is what i finally specialised in and we covered everything from sculpture to jewellery making and silversmithing. In Ceramics we did a bit pot throwing and sculpture. Glass we covered fusing and stain glass, stained glass making was amazing and finally textiles we covered everything from cleaning and dying sheeps wool(very smell) then we spun our own wool and did some felting and weaving! Hopefully i've given you a few ideas.
