jena76
I just wondered if anyone elses children got punished at school for getting 11 out of 15 on a spelling test? Im fuming as my son came home from school today upset that he had got to stay in tommorrow on his dinner break because he "ONLY" got 11 out of 15. I think this is wrong as 11 out of 15 shows that he has tried and not just put his homework down and left it. Do any other schools have this punishment? Thunzi
It depends whether you see it as punishment or not. If he is staying in so they can go through the words that he misspelled and help him improve for the future then you should be pleased that the school is taking a proactive approach to trying to help your son. If he's just going to be sat there though then if I were you I would be annoyed.
beckb
Thats awful! 11 out of 15 isn't bad! Punishing him isn't going to make the other four words suddenly become correct. Stupid school. My son is dyslexic so spelling tests are a nightmare for him. Although to be fair his teacher is very supportive - we got a gold star for 7 out of 10 once! Hope it rains tomorrow so he doesn't feel too left out in his dinner break detention.
jena76
I'm not sure what they will do to be honest. But i do think it is out of order making him stay in it's not as though he hasn't tried! The spellings he was doing were hard and i am more than happy with him for getting 11 out of 15:thumbsup:

They may simply want a 10-minute chat just to go through why he struggled on the words he didn't get correct. It sounds as though he is upset for a reason so it may not have been explained properly to him what is going to happen. I think calling the school stupid is extremely harsh! Teachers have a difficult job as it is without being questioned on a forum where they can't defend their actions. If however the intention has been solely to punish him by means of detention I take it all back, we just don't know enough to comment yet.

I don't care if it's a 5 or 10 minute chat or even to do his test again he shouldn't be kept in on his break he hasn't been naughty!

Teachers have a difficult job as it is without being questioned on a forum where they can't defend their actions. . I called the school stupid. I don't think it was harsh. I could have chosen a better phrase perhaps. I appreciate that teachers have a difficult job to do but given that this boy tried to do his spelling test and got 73% correct, which is a good effort in my book, punishing him seems to be a bit extreme. Maybe asking him to write the four words out in sentences as extra homework to help him would be more appropriate and helpful. Lunchtime detentions for 73% on a test? Thats harsh. This is just a general comment, I don't know how old your son is or what level of schooling he's at generally, but, have you considered its going to be a 1 on 1 with the teacher? She might be seeing several students, maybe even all of them in the class. Doing a review like that can be more beneficial for a child. If he's not in front of his mates he has no-one to play up to. He can be honest with the teacher about why he struggled on those words without fear of being teased. I'm not saying that is definitely what is going to happen, but there is a lot to consider and I don't think you've thought about at all the possibilities yet. Please let me know what does happen tomorrow, if it is a general detention then I think the teacher is wrong, but I don’t think it will be.
