I met my husband Trevor in the Canon Hall in1963. Spent many happy nights in there watching the bands. Some of my favourites were Mike Shane and the Chevrolets and Vic Lynch and the Cortinas. johnpm   18 #77 Posted June 22, 2014 I had a ladies hairdressers in Hind St from1972 to 78. then I went to live on Barnsley Rd, at the end near the traffic lights. My son and daughter went to Owler lane school, Darren and Georgina. I couldn't wait to move away and when the council wrote to say, ""they wanted to buy my house"" I phoned straight away, it was theirs. My neighbours of a very long time thaught I was crazy, I moved in 2006 to Ecclesfield and I love it. And by the way we got a good price, more than if we'd tried to sell ourselves. Drugs changed Firvale, scroungers, who didn't know the meaning of the word "WORK". Coloured people are not to blame for everything,I saw that first hand living there. There are still nice people live in the area, and it's wrong to judge a person because of where they live. You can go on any road in any area and see a scruffy house. Lets not judge Firvale so harshley, and I'm sure many will agree.By the way, how come no one mentioned Roxy School of Motoring.  Did Sue Foster wife of Bev work with you at that time? I am sure worked at that hairdressers. I knew them through Reform Chapel Youth Club
 Share this content via...
Cath Iwan   10 #78 Posted June 22, 2014 Hi. I lived on Wensley Drive, which was at the top of Hinde Street from about 1960 till about 1966 when they were demolished. Then went to live at shiregreen. Went to Owler Lane Infants, Grimesthorpe Juniors and then back down to Owler Lane to finish my schooling. While I was there it changed to Earl Marshal. Left Earl Marshal in the summer of 1971. Also went to Trinity Firvale Methodist Church where I was Sunday School QUeen in 1971 and My sister Margaret followed a year later in 1972. It was lovely when we lived there, but not sure if I would want to live there now.
 Share this content via...

rebrab   10 #80 Posted June 26, 2014 In the 1950's I was born and lived in Idsworth Road, straight opposite the WM Club. We would make a few bob out of the punters starting about mid-October doing "penny for the guy". There was also a place called Roxy's further down the road. It had been a cinema but was some sort of club "when I were a lad". There was a shop called McGregor's at the bottom on the junction with Firth Park Road where we would buy spice. Me Mum used to buy fire-lighters and bundles of sticks from Pope's to light the coal fire, before Sheffield went smokeless . Must have been a Co-op somewhere. Can't remember where but can still remember my Mum's check number. Not going to say what it was 'cos I don't want somebody else getting our divi' Me and me brother used to sail a home made boat on the boating lake, next to Firth Park Library. Went to Hucklow Road school and we were in "The Life Boys" (Boys Brigade juniors) which used to meet in a John Wesleyan chapel down at Grimesthorpe.
