B&B price - Am I being ripped off?

Recommended Posts

Earlier today I booked over the phone a B&B for a long weekend in Whitby for myself and the missus. I was quoted £78 for the room (ie £39 each), agreed and gave my debit card details as the hotel wanted me to pay the first night's costs as a non-refundable deposit.

I have since googled the hotel and found they have a website, on which the price of the room is listed as £35 per person, ie £70 for the room.

Now I don't want to kick up a fuss for £8 a night, but legally can I phone the place back and insist on paying the lower price? Or have I - by agreeing over the phone and giving my card details - already consented to paying the higher price?

If you booked through an agency site and not direct with the hotel you can sometimes pick up booking fees!!

You could plead ignorant when it comes to settling the final balance and just calculate the remainder owing on the £35 a night quotation!

I am sure as a 'gesture of goodwill' the proprietors will honour the published rates on their website!

But personally I would email the site you booked on and give them the link to the cheaper price and they will probably price match it anyway - they usually do if a cheaper price is found within 7 days of booking !!

Good Luck and enjoy Whitby it is a wonderful place!!

The plot thickens - I emailed the B&B last night re the cheaper prices on the website & the owner has replied saying that it's an old website and the prices are 6 years out of date. This is complete rubbish as the prices are the same in the holiday brochure for 2006 that I picked up at the Tourist Information office in Leeds earlier this week. Even if it wasn't surely it's false advertising to have prices online that no longer apply?

I'm angry now 'cause not only am I being ripped off but I'm also being lied to, so I now want to pull out of the deal altogether. The problem now is that I've given the B&B my card details and they've charged me for the first night as a deposit. As I consented to this when I booked over the phone, I can well see the bloke saying that the deposit is non-refundable and I'll be £78 out of pocket before we've even started our holiday.

Can anyone - perhaps with some knowledge of the trading standards laws - give me some indication of where I stand here?

The website - if you can glean any clues from that - is http://www.rivierawhitby.com/RIV/Page_2x.html

Treating her to a Four-Poster I see, you old romantic!

Why not get yourself a new email address, mail them saying you've found their place on the net, and ask them to confirm if the price for a similar weekend/room is £140 for two nights. Then you'll know if they're lying.

Go to the hotel and steal enough towels/curtains/glasses/cutlery to cover the difference :)

Leave the curtains. Just make sure you take a needle and cotton with you... unpick the lining....... strategically place inside a few prawns......sew back up again..........revenge is sweet........:hihi:
