topdog
I have absolutely no knowledge of the Sheffield karaoke scene. I'd love it if there was a place where you could sing - diverse range of stuff, jazz, easy listening (Sinatra etc), Elvis, country music, classic pop (not necessarily all in the same place, that would be too good to be true!) - I enjoy singing and been told I have a decent voice - but wouldn't want to end up in a dive where rat-arsed women gather to indulge in what sounds like strangulation and otherwise torture of innocent cats! Perhaps I am being overly pessimistic, only from what I've heard! - in that case can someone please reassure me? Nice place, good audience - that sort of thing. Maybe it's not called karaoke - "singing nights", not sure? Ta very much x
Ousetunes
Not far from you, the Sheffield (formerly the Shiny Sheff) has a very decent karaoke night on Thursdays. Songs range from Jim Reeves, Tammy Wynette, Meatloaf, Elvis, Grease and Saturday Night Fever (that's Mike who 'featured' briefly on X Factor last year) to all the usual suspects. Fortunately, Andy and Mandy don't carry versions of I Will Always Love You, I Will Survive or Young Hearts Run Free in their (vast) collection and the clientel couldn't be more different from what you'd expect in 'towny' pubs. As a musician/vocalist myself, the standard is usually very good. Like any other karaoke, it has good nights and bad nights, quiet and loud. But when it's on song (excuse me) it's very good and you come away smelling fresh as a daisy and still able to talk as the pub is totally non-smoking. It begins around 9.15 though it makes sense to get there earlier (it is a pub after all).
Rich
Hmm, quite fancy that one night.. Might have to forego the quiz in the Robin Hood one Wednesday and nip up the Shiny Sheff for the Karaoke on a Thursday.
Classic Rock
I do the karaoke at the White Bear in Ecclesfield on Sundays. It gets going around 4ish and runs for the rest of the evening. A real mish mash of people. There's the old guys doing the Frank Sinatra songs, there's some really good female singers, there's an Ali Campbell impersonator, there's just regular people who get up and have a go...all in all a good atmosphere and no bother. absynthfairy
Feel like a bit of a karaoke geek because I regularly frequent all of the afore mentioned venues! If you want to avoid squawking drunk women anywhere you go midweek is likely to have people out who want to sing rather than those on a drinking mission who suddenly think karaoke is a great idea... Westways always has "proper" singers in on a monday...Largely because Andy has the equipment and to song choices to encourage us! The Sheffield is also a good night out although a bit of a trek for me so don't tend to bother - and Ousetunes my friend has sung Young Hearts Run Free every time we have been there and has been well applauded - so there! If you want a proper cabaret karaoke the best place has to be The Parish Oven in Thorpe Salvin - top night out, karaoke at its best - just don't put in a ballad after 10pm! Darin runs a highly professional set up and I've never heard a bad singer in there - mostly old boys doing the business, he certainly moans at me when I want to sing the latest Girls Aloud stuff! Best audience in Sheffield (well almost Sheffield). Get there early and have your tea there - you won't regret it! Mick's prosound Karaoke is also good - missing him dreadfully at The Old Crown London Rd on a Thurs - drunker crowd on a fri there but fewer singers. Need to be in early to get a seat. He does The Birley at Mosborough on a Sat and the standard is very good there too....Now that is a good night out. Cavells on the High Street is ok on a Thurs - bit slow to get started and very LOUD....KJ's usually turn me down (big mouth see) but the chappie there doesn't seem to bother and I deafen even myself - also the music in between is loud and its a bit difficult to hold a conversation...Bedroom is a bit like that too, but their sound system is far from great. Have now started going to The Woodseats on a Thurs - bit ruff and ready but a good sound system and the 10pm music quiz is a welcome treat! PuressenceUK
monday night at westways we have people singing everything from lloyd webber and modern stuff right back to the 50's Can vouch for this as I was in there recently. Had a bloke dressed as a cowboy doing country and western, soul, slow ballads, madchester, pulp and loads more! Variety and definately no cheese. Not once did 2 drunk lasses get up to sing "I will survive" in a hideous manner. And there are around 25,000 tracks to choose from.......
muddycoffee
Classy karaoke is where people come to sing to backing tracks without the use of a screen prompting the lyrics. I am not aware of any such night in sheffield. The main difference between this kind of karaoke and the normal type is that everyone who sings tends to be sober, and it is a more reverent atmosphere. And usually there is applause after each number. Like an open mike night minus the acoustic guitar.
