DavidRa
I have inherited my son's desktop which is only 2 or 3 years old.The two problems are 1 He says a virus as slowed the computer down and it does not work well. 2 The internet used to work but since the above cannot establish a connection. Any suggestions?

Does the PC have any antivirus software installed & up to date?

sccsux
Windows Xp home, virus not known ,and do not know of any antivirus software installed. As you can't get online to perform an online scan (probably due to the infection) I'd advise (very reluctantly - unless you know someone who has AV SW that runs from floppy/CD/etc.) a re-format & install of the operating system:(. yummyyumyum
i had to do this not long back, unfortunately you lose everything stored on your computer when re-formatting. i am not really very computer literate but this is really pretty easy to do, i did also have to re install the internet completely as my conection was also affected. good luck and hope you sort the problem. XvanityX
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! get rid of Norton. It does bad things to computers, it's worse than actually having a virus. Get something free like AVG instead, the performance difference is amazing.
Bourne
I would bin it and re-install Windows, assuming you have the media and there's no documents you need to keep on the HDD. Just don't stick it on the Internet until it's up to Windows XP SP2. B
