azucarmoreno
Just come through the station and the rail police are operating a body scanner.....EXCELLENT! purpose being to detect knives etc on people. Saw at least 2 people being taken away which if that means 2 less knives on the streets of Sheffield then well done. Also there were full ticket checks on all platforms by ticket inspectors too ...another good thing..bet it killed some of the daily fare dodgers to actually have to pay a fare for a change (instead of being subsidised by people like me who buy a season ticket or ticket) And the drugs dog was also out on duty Bet the do-gooders soon start bleating about civil liberties etc but at least for one day the station was reclaimed and made a vastly safer place..and that can only be a good thing! Bad day for a few people then but I'm pleased to see police action finally being taken aginst the large number of beggars/scroats who usually hang around the station begging for money etc or being abusive and generally viewing the staton as onelarge 'cash point'. Thunzi
I've never quite understood why ticket checks weren't done at Sheffield. Every other major station I've been too has these checks, I always presumed it is because us Sheffield lot are nice, trustworthy folk, guess not now. Heyesey
as i understand it ticket checks were done away with at Sheffield cos it was deemed.. 'customer unfriendly' They were done away with almost everywhere; since which time, they've been brought back almost everywhere. Give it a few years and they'll be done away with almost everywhere, again.
Deepak_S7
Bit of a shame I cant argue about the body scanner but the laxity around going on the platform here without a ticket was nice and just like the old times. It was always nice being able to meet people on the platform One of the things that make life a bit nicer and innocent here has gone then Deepak
Andy C
Don't worry folks, these aren't permanant, at stations like Sheffield security checks and ticket barriers are just done on an occassional, random basis. The only stations on the Midland Mainline route with permanant ticket barriers planned at the moment are Leeds, Loughborough and Leicester. azucarmoreno
Well in my opinion all stations should be barriered..then that would stop fair dodgers and poor saps like me wouldn't have to subsidise them. also it would keep the undesirables off the station.. I hope transport police and MML do a lot more of the kind of exercise they did at sheffield station today at sheffield often!!
RPG
Ticket barriers are all well and good, until you use them every morning, find out the pitfalls and then hate them.
Greybeard
Last time I met somebody off a train there were ticket barriers, and to meet travellers on the platform you had to buy a 'platform ticket'; - which was two old pence I believe
mc55
ticket inspectors on the trains have been renamed 'revenue protection' officers / inspectors ... interesting approach.
