Strix
I've just had one Fortunately I'm a tough customer , but some bloke claiming to be from our credit card company (with an asian accent - though our bank doesn't have an asian call centre), demanded to speak to Mr Strix, and was rather rude (lack of customer service training here? ) I rang our credit card company, they checked the accounts we have with them, and confirmed that nobody had called us - not even for 'sales' Be vigilant everybody

JoeP
Rule of thumb is to take their name and say you'll ring their customer support line immediately, explaining that you're concerned about fraud. Refuse to give ANY information to them - even if it's the debt collection arm, just ring 'em back. Don't call them back on a number THEY give you on the phone; contact a number from your statement. Good heads up, Strix!
yosser_huges
Well, to be honest i dont think all these calls are hoaxes. I just finnished talking to a nigerian bloke who needed an account to deposit millions into. In exchange for giving him my bank details and allowing him to use my account. he has promised me... MILLIONS. how could i refuse? By this time next week ill be rolling in it.

Tony
It's not as easy as it might seem. I've had calls from BT in the past when my bank has mucked up our direct debit, and they have asked for my password on a cold call!! If BT can't get it right, what chance does anyone else have? bigflesh
After seeing this thread and making numerous phone calls this afternoon, I've managed to net me over £10k in revenue! The Flesh is only joking! On a serious note peeps, be careful out there, never give your card number, ccv, start date, expiry date, name and address, national insurance number or cup size to any cold caller.... its the road to bad news. As for some of the corporates that are offering direct debit, be careful and always ask to ring back (they should offer you a freephone number). All examples of what you deem to be 'dodgy' to http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/ and http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
Claire18
A good point that I've been told in the past is that if someone is calling you they shouldn't really need to 'confirm your identity' as it is them who has initiated the contact. It should really be you confirming that they are genuine! As has been said above - never give out information unless you are totally sure that the caller is genuine.
