Removal costs - help! what did you pay?

Recommended Posts

I recently moved and used sbs, they were great! really helpful and friendly. I called them for a quote and they charged by the hour with a minimum of four hours (I think) We moved from gleadless to ecclesfield and it was all finished within the minimum time. they also provided the packing boxes (at a charge) prior to the move which you can either pick up or have delivered.

We have also just used SBS removals.

I tried others recommended on here (such as Merrills) but no one else was available for today.

All I can say is that (although they are a bit dearer than some at £45 per hour) the service, both from the staff in the office (Bev / Dean) and the men on the van (Darren / Glyn) was absolutley 1st rate.

All my (many) queries were answered immediately on their freephone number and the guys who actually did the move couldn't have been more helpful, checking where every single item wanted to go and even re-arranging the furniture in the new house for us.

We were inside the 4 hour minimum charge even though they had to travel all the way (from Ecclesfield to Birley) - they only included 30 minutes each way as the travelling time in the calculations.

Highly recommended, you obviously get what you pay for.

well, i rang around for several quotes a few days ago, and this is what i found.

Andrews removals(01142919146) - £38 +vat per hour, min 4 hours.

boxes between £1.50 and £2.50.

Williams removals (01142574703). some confusion - phone was answered, pushy woman wanted all my details when i just wanted to know how much per hour/insurance/boxes etc. when she got to asking me where i had heard about sbs i questioned whether they were sbs because i thought they were called williams, and the phone went dead. someone called me back a minute later (bev) and said that williams rent office space off sbs, then quoted me mon-thurs £45 +vat, f-s £50 +vat. min 4 hours. i was very suspicious and weirded.

AH removals (08000350943) mon-thurs £38 +vat, fri-sat £44 +vat. £1 +vat per box.

merrills (can't find where i wrote it down) m-t £40, f-s £45 +vat. min 4hrs. boxes £1. really nice friendly guy.

SBS had quoted me £45 or £48ph +vat, min 4 hours.

Williams do rent space down at sbs...in fact i think they rent to a few companies for parking.....andrews are also there, pickfords and acorn.

Funny about that call to williams?

unfortunately unless you know where the depot is you don't know which companies are all in one place - not that it really matters, i suppose.

very funny about the call to williams. i was going to use sbs but now i'm very suspicious. i liked the guy on the phone at merrill's more anyway, so i think we'll be using them.

If you check on the companies registration database, you will find that SBS actually trade under several names. These names have been bought up over the years and absorbed by SBS (Williams, Manning Vanning). People who believe they are using a company they may have used years ago will infact end up with SBS. Thats not such a bad thing though, there are much worse companies out there. Other companies park at SBS's depot at Ecclesfield and use their storage facilities. The best thing to do is just phone around, try to get a visit and expect to pay between £38 - £45 hour for a decent service. Also, try phoning some independant storage depots (Armadillo, Admirals) that don't have any involvement in removals directly to see who they recommend. You'll find they have a fairly unbiased view and they have companies in on a daily basis. Good luck.
