Avalon
Hi all I have accidentally purchased the OEM version of Windows XP, but it wont install, so ive had to put back on a slightly more questionable version of said OS. Im going to try and return it to Ebuyer and swap it for the retail boxed version - what do you rekon the chances are?
XvanityX
Is it still sealed?
XvanityX
Sorry, just re read what you wrote. lol. I don't think that they'll accept it back to be honest. Most shops wont accept PC software back once it has been opened.
davyboy
Is there any difference betwen the OEM and retail versions, except price perhaps. When I had the m/board changed on my pc I had the OEM version of XP installed (cost £85+) and have since reformatted and reinstalled using the OEM disc with no problem
Ghozer
OEM is un boxed, and whilst the disk / manual may be sealed, they are usually intended to be sold along with a PC I believe that Its illegal for a shop to Sell an OEM Version of an OS Without a System, with THAT OS installed, and the Lisence Sticker on the side of the machine (or similar) Pretty much like HP/Compaq etc, they are NOT allowed to sell it seperate as OEM versions often have 'extras' specifically for the machine it was intended for... If they sold you this, as a stand alone product, then your within your rights to return it, under the consumer act...

But they MUST come bundled with ANY piece of hardware (this is why most OEM software is sold along with a cheap £1.99 mouse etc)
Ghozer
so, still, if he bought the OEM version 'stand alone' (IE not with anything) then he can get it returned on that basis at the end of the day..
XvanityX
The shop probably wouldn't let him, but then he could threaten them and say that he would go to trading standards about them. Because they have broken their terms of agreement with Microsoft. Just make sure you have your receipts ready in case you have to go this far. sallonoroff
The XP OEM and Retails versions should be exactly the same in terms of the CD contents... only difference is the licencing. OEM should come with a machine and once you scrap that box, the licence dies. Retail is yours to do with as you want (one machine at a time). +
