Greybeard
President Bush is pushing hard for the CIA to be allowed to torture terrorist suspects in order to extract information from them and prevent further attacks http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article1603860.ece Where Bush goes Blair invariably follows so we might see a similar proposal here before long, but do we want our security services to have such powers ? Strikes me as the thin end of a very thick wedge.
cgksheff
However, the amended legislation would still allow the use of evidence obtained under coercion and bar defendants from hearing some of the evidence against them, even when they are on trial for their lives. Not acceptable.
nigsmig
greybeard answer it for yourself.... you're going about your own everyday business and all of a sudden you're arrested. youre a terrorist suspect maybe coz you were seen innocently talking to the wrong person, maybe coz someone wanted to drop you in it. anyone can be a suspect! purdyamos
It makes every scrap of rhetoric about 'freedom', 'civilisation', 'democratic values' or 'justice' utterly worthless. (Not that I'm so naive as to believe those were the reasons behind the invasions and wars.) As worthless as any evidence retrieved under torture. Jabberwocky
Depends if torturing people is in revelations. The prog i just watched said that the americans are trying to bring about the end of the world so if its in the bible then theyre going to try it. nigsmig
couldn't we torture bush just to remind him of how uncivilised it is? he seems to be cognitively deficient
nigsmig
slightly off thread but didn't anyone think that when bush declared he wanted bin laden "dead or alive" what had happened to 'innocent till proven guilty' which in my naivity i thought was a pretty big requirement for civilisation. has he got an agenda to redefine certain words in the english language? rubydazzler
In my opinion, it's totally unacceptable. Even if you put aside all considerations of common humanity and civilised behaviour, no matter what manner of person you're dealing with, when has information obtained under torture ever been reliable? nigsmig
agreed, you can make anyone say anything under torture. they'll even make up what they think you want to hear just to stop the madness/pain and back to the moral bit... torture therefore says more about the truth of the torturer - he isn't doing it for honest information
