willman Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 i tapped my daughter on the back of one hand as punishment for bad behaviour/disrespect etc. until the age of 2. she once had her legs thoroughly paddled aged 5 when she thought she could mimic a peer and have a temper tantrum/screaming & foot stomping 'cos she didn't want to do as we asked. apart from that we have never had to smack our daughter.although i have been close to "knocking her block off" a few times. until the child is old enough to understand the consequences of their actions - what choice is there. it was actually in some baby books that if a baby bites you continually- then bite them back. the reason - until they get bitten they dont know that their own actions are hurting others. the problem with modern parenting is that parents can't be bothered to maintain or monitor alterntive punishments.

But will you still feel bad when they grow-up to respect your authority ? My parents smacked me, thats why I didn't give them any lip, and still don't, it's not that I'm scared of them or phychologically damaged, I know when they say "do as i say" they mean it and it's not open to debate. Kids are far to soft and spoiled these days, being "sent to the naughty step" is not much of a threat realy. Just my opinion.

How can you even compare that with a way of disciplining a child. Adults Do know right from wrong and there is a bit of a difference between domestic abuse and trying to find a harmless way to discipline a child. I do see your point Cyclone, but personally I wouldn't see you taking my lunch money as bullying no.

willman Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 i honestly think that 1000's of people have no idea what they are talking about. the occasional slap or tap of a child is in no way directly related to wife beating in all cases. in real terms mental abuse,overbearing parents,controlling parents, reluctance to allow children to develop as indivuduals by force feeding them religion or your own biased political & racial feelings is far more destructive and causes more social problems than smacking them.

All parental control is backed up with a display of force (physical or otherwise). I don't have to smack you to get your lunch money, I can physically restrain you, or make you sit on a step, or shut you in a room until you comply and give me your money.

If you have to physically restrain a 2 year old, or lock them in a room, then i'd say you've got a problem that goes beyond whether you smack or not. Parental control stems from the fact that they provide for the child. If the child disobeys, you don't provide something. They soon get the idea of consequences for actions. If the best consequence you can think of is to hit them, then you lack imagination.

Note I said 'shut' and not 'lock' in a room. I know you haven't got children, but I think you're in for a very rude awakening when you do. The above are basically techniques for dealing with misbehaving kids as prescribed by the current toddler taming gurus. What do you think 'Time-Out' means?
