ann_a
I ask this because I find it,and the American attitude once the subject arises, totally fascinating... I once asked an American in another forum what patriotism meant to him on a personal level, and was totally taken aback by the response. He was really upset.Thought that I had asked the question to insult...?? peterw
Their taught to be patriotic at school. We used to be taught a toned down version of patriotism, which is probably why there were so many volunteers fighting in the two world wars, but it’s no longer continued — hence the lack of patriotism. And before anyone mentions it, Londoners are still patriots because they’ve more or less got Buck House on their doorsteps.
royjames
Having visited the states twice in recent years I was taken aback by how many of their buildings have the star and stripes flying above them,if only we could be like that. Here its frowned upon to show any patriotism, what a sad country we have become, too scared of being called racist.
Fareast
I've worked in 5 foreign countries, 3 of them Islamic, and each one has shown far more evidence of patriotism than we do in the U.K.------flags flying, parades, celebrating national days and so on.In Turkey, for example, EVERY school had a ceremony on Monday mornings and Friday afternoon that included the flag being raised and the singing of the national anthem. It's a bit of a mystery why we in the U.K have moved, as a nation, to being almost ashamed of our country? In fact, I'd say, over the years we've had more to be proud of than most countries who have been powerful or had empires. It's not America which is out of step with the rest of the world on this subject. It's us.
English Glory
It's the fault of leftists. Simple as. There's such a huge disparity even with the seperate areas of the United Kingdom. Proud Wales and Scotland is allowed to, quite rightly speak loud and proud of their country but in the misguided leftist ideal which is put on like a plague by the leftists to citizens of England we can't do the same. Leftists are responsible for a lot of things... rising violent crime through lessening sentences, declining education standards etc - most of it is because they inflict their brainwashing on students which in turn breeds no loyalty to the world's greatest nation. psyn
Having visited the states twice in recent years I was taken aback by how many of their buildings have the star and stripes flying above them,if only we could be like that. Here its frowned upon to show any patriotism, what a sad country we have become, too scared of being called racist. that is unfortunately very true, not the rasist part , just the sheer lack of patriotism (football aside) but unlike the US England doesn't need to wear its heart on its sleeve, pretty much everything america does/is doing Great Britian can say 'been there, done that, got the tshirt, wore it, folded it up and put in a drawer.' which I think is why it's not shown as much as it's felt (bad for the country? not sure.) edit to say, A lot of very bad things have been done over the years in the name of queen and country, ie dragging countries kicking and screaming into the -then- modern age, even our closest neighbours have been oppressed in some ways. All in all this has generally moved the development of a lot of countries forward by large margins (with untold casulties and untold advantages for us and for them) and I think that maybe shame/guilt about the methods used/motives behind, doing this has arisen over the years which has something to do with the lack of patriotism. As I imagine in america there will eventually be a huge backlash against what is being carried out in their name (and unfortunately ,ours) which may lead to a similar sort of withdrawll of patriotism in time to come. "Those who like to wave flags, don't deserve to have one" Banksy (i think )? maybe england/uk needs a new flag to stand behind?
