Jabberwocky
On another thread, bodybuilders, weight lifters etc are made fun of by people who dont often use a gym. Im wondering if the attitudes of non gym going people is down to envy of people who use gyms often? Are they jealous of the gym rats body? Or contemptuous of all the time they spend labouring away at a rack of dumb bells? Do they assume that all bodybuilders are steroid abusing violent maniacs? I used to hate bodybuilders for a lot of the reasons that some people do now, I thought they were all mindless steroid-heads with the IQ of a lettuce but once I was actually tempted to start lifting weights my attitude changed. I lifted weights for over 15 years and in that time I realised that it takes hard work to build a muscular body, even if you have the genetics to do so. Plus, to keep track of the dietary needs and exercise routines, reps, number of sets, symmetry and all that gubbins takes brains. I rarely use a gym these days, but when I see a bodybuilder I know that hes worked hard for the body he has, its the only sport where you can carry the results of your labours around with you. What do you think of your local barbell head? Self-obsessed pretty boy, or hard working athlete? Im biased, but then I know the amount of hard work and discipline these people subject themselves to. nick2
I've got nothing against people who want to improve their appearance in any way, I know a lot of people on here think it's shallow to care what you look like, and would rather everyone looked like fat scarecrows. Jabberwocky
I managed to achieve the fat scarecrow look many years ago and last night I looked at myself in a full length mirror for the first time in ages. Imagine Wurzel Gummage with a bouncy castle stuffed up his vest. Im back in the gym next week!
AlquarUK
I've no idea whats going on with people these days? If someone wants to go to the gym for 1.5 hours every day, only eat a strict diet of complex carbs and proteins.........and no beer to get the body they want. So be it! I used to do this! I no longer do and like you say, when someone has an muscular physique I now appreciate how much time, dedicatiuon and money they have used to get it! But thats their choice. Choose to go to the gym, or don't but don't critisise others for what they want to do, especially when it really has none or very little impact on anyone else. Everyone is different and we all like different thing - LIVE & LET LIVE!

Going to a gym to keep fit, sure; I'm supposed to do that myself Going to a gym to make yourself look good so you can show off your muscles; bah, idiot. dizzy_chick
I have never managed to keep going to a gym- no matter how much the fee is! I do feel slightly envious of people that do and the amount of will power which it must take some times. In terms of body building, I never know if they have taken steroids or not. Anyone who puts that much effort into their body I think is quite vain. But good luck to them!!
Jabberwocky
But if youre good at football you show off when you play, yes? If youre good at darts you try to show off as you play to show others how good you are. Once the game is over though, thats it, all you can do is talk about it. Bodybuilders get to show off ALL the time, some of them are so big that they cant hide their bodys even in the baggyest of clothes. Thats a good thing isnt it? I never had the genes to grow huge muscles, and I never wanted to use `roids, but the bit of muscle I DID manage to build stood out and to be honest, I was embarrassed at times, it was if I was showing off even when I wasnt. I did weights because I was fat and didn't want to be anymore rather than vanity (is not wanting to be fat vanity??? I dunno).
