The Brass Eye Paedophilia Special - Your Views

A couple of posts on the site have mentioned the above show in various contexts over the last few weeks, and I was interested to hear other peoples views on what they thought?

Clearly it was of MASSIVE controversy when it came out, and seems to always come up in conversation when people talk about limitations to morals or humour.

Personally, I think the principle message, that of the media's artificial hysteria and hypocrisy on the subject of paedophilia, was spot on. I do think though, that Brass Eye, like all shows, contains its own brand of humour, and to fully appreciate that show, or rather, understand it, you would need to be a regular viewer. I fear anyone watching the show in isolation, would wander what on earth they are tuned into.

Your thoughts?

I think it was the greatest satirical program of the last ten years or so. Chris Morris is a hero of mine, which is why I have in my avatar.

I've got nothing but scorn for sensationalist tabloid newspapers. I think it's dirty journalism, and I find it very frustrating that in a country where we have near complete freedom of the press, that a large section of that press chooses to take the cheap and easy route of fear-mongering.

Another frustrating thing is that so many politicians and public figures simply don't have the guts to take on the tabloids. The S*n wields a huge influence in this country, and they're not averse to carrying on long vendettas against anyone who does stand up to them. One of the few groups who has stood up to them (and the most successful) is the people of Liverpool after Hillsborough (arguably the most vicious tabloid smear of all time). The S*n still sells a pitiful number of copies on Merseyside.

Chris Morris did stand up to them though, and he completely embarrassed them. I can remember me and my friend watching the Brass Eye special and laughing like drains. It was simply a slightly-caricatured version of what was already out there, and it showed the tabloid editors/hacks as the coke-snorting, lying, hypocritical fear-mongerers that they really are.

Their reaction was, of course, completely predictable. They went into indignant outrage overload, labelling the program as a mockery of paedophile victims and the sickest program ever made. That was the only approach they could take. They couldn't acknowledge that the show was a satire of tabloid paedophile hysteria, because that would also have meant acknowledging that there was tabloid paedophile hysteria.

I often think it's a crying shame that Chris Morris isn't still doing Brass Eye or something similar. The tabloids are still scaring people to sell copies, and he could do great shows about asylum seekers/immigrants, bird flu or islamic terrorism.

It was a great show. It wasn't the best in the series, 'Drugs' and 'Sex' were better episodes. Though I still laughed and guffawed like a yak throughout.

A look on wikipedia for facts about the Paedo spesh brought up some interesting facts:

The Daily Star printed an article decrying Chris Morris and the show next to a piece about the then 15-year-old singer Charlotte Church's breasts under the headline "She's a big girl now"

The Daily Mail featured pictures of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who were 13 and 11 at the time respectively, in their bikinis next to a headline describing Brass Eye as "Unspeakably Sick"

Unfortunately, I think any channel would be wary of programs involving Morris since Brass Eye.

Even if he could celebrity endorsement for nonsense schemes (which is doubtful), he's trodden that ground before so I personally would like to see something new from him. My Wrongs and Nathan Barley were great, more please dad.
