tobster
Star Office is smaller, more advance, and works 100% with MS Office and is only £70 for 5 computers (it in the licence) so why is the world still hooked on MS Office which is £300 per computer and is a weaker programme (that is a matter of fact not my view) Star Office works in the same way as MS Office it such show why much people are unwilling to change to better things and stick with what they know

dosxuk
Having tried Open office, star office and many version of MS Office, I've always been happier with MS office - everything is where I expect it. However, they are very similar in feature set, and the price of star/open office is unbeatable. However, I firmly believe that Office2007 is going to wipe the floor with the competition. Even Beta 2 is such a massive improvement over the older versions that it takes me a little while to get used to the old fashioned versions with thier long winded ways of doing things. Added to that the major work done on the Office rendering engine, and the large number of templates and styles built into the product by default, Star/Open office are going to be playing catch up for a while. evildrneil
Star and open office by no way 'work 100%' with MS office. They may be fine with simple pieces of text but moving complex reports between star/open/M$ officeis a fine way of trashing formatting and throwing images all over the place! And when publishers demand a document in word doc format then it's essential that doesn't happen!

That's my experience too, sadly. I think it's great that OpenOffice exists and i'm sure it'd be fine for most people if they gave it a chance... but they don't... 'because it's not Word'. (or Excel. etc) People are gluttons for punishment and like to stick to what they know! +

richard
OpenOffice and Star Office use a new international document standard format. This means that there will be lots of applications built to support the standard, which will do useful things. There is already talk of making a Word plugin for it. That means it is likely to become a standard for those businesses that require their documents to be readable in 5,10,15 years, i.e. whenever the current Word Document format is no longer supported in office. It can already be a pain to look at early Word documents. I think that there are interesting times ahead.
