squidge00
I need to buy a new tower because the last one blew up. I have seen an Apple Mac G3 for sale on ebay, and am very interested in buying it, because our old machine was also a Mac. However, i do not know very much about the preferred specification. This is what is included on the Mac for sale - Specifications: 400MHz processor 768MB RAM 60GB Hard drive SCSI USB Firewire 400 10/100 Base T Ethernet Card Mac OS 10.3.9 installed ADB Keyboard ADB Mouse Can you please advise me whether or not this is a good model? I only want to use the computer for writing letter, spreadsheets, music and photos. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
luv_milk
it's the processor speed that's the downside. if you only intend to run one or two applications at a time, then probably won't be too bad, but i'd try to get hold of a G4 if i was you. i know of a printer's that sells reconditioned macs, might be worth a look http://www.cypherdigital.co.uk/new05/refurb_macs.htm
defstef
Hey Squidge... I'm guessing that the one you're looking at is the one with the bundled apps (all of which are boxed, it has to be said)? To be honest, I can see this one being a bargain, but, as luv_milk says, the processor is pretty slow. Some of the apps are quite out of date, too. You're going to struggle running newer versions of software, but then again, if you don't need something so up to date, perhaps it will be fine for you (what did you own before?). In the long run though, I'd say you'd get much more out of a G4, if you can afford it. ADB keyboards and mice will become harder to replace, and although you could use the USB slot with a hub, it's a lot nicer to not have so many redundant ports. Plus the G4 powermacs are nice and shiny.
mr chris
Older Macs, such as G3s aren't that great. A Mac mini (even the pre-intel chip ones) will outperform that *and* run more recent software. You should be able to get one for a decent price off ebay. sallonoroff
G3 powermacs are ok, but i'd tend to agree with the others here, you probably want at least a G4. What's your current system? And what OS are you running? If you're wanting to stick with MacOS9, then you can only go so far in the Apple range... +
gingablade
Somone who I work with may have one to sell but can not confirm untill Monday. If you havent bought one yet I could ask what he has got that is surplus to his needs and pass on his email address if he agrees.
