boston
Hi Was just asking as to the current circumstances regarding the billet mill. I believe this work was being transfered to Rotherham, but the plant in Rotherham was not ready on time. Does any one know how long the billet mill operations at Stocksbridge is to continue, and are they working a 24 hour shift system now?

Brentos2004
I dont think it will be in operation for much longer. They are transferring alot of the production to the meadowhall site.

tazman
And then that will be the end of a long line of steel production in the valley which will come to an end. My parents still live in the village and my dad worked till he retired in the steel works and then went back after retirement as an official guide for visiting groups from all over the world. Hence the old saying in the steel business, "You can take the man out of the steelworks but you cant take the steelworks out of the man " It will be a great shame when they finally finish it all there and I just wonder what will happen to the village and how it will survive. Not that any body from the Corus top management will be bothered as it wont affect them much. !!
The Zeppelin
The Stocksbridge Billet Mill will continue until investment developments have been made to the Aldwarke Mill. It is not envisaged that the Stocksbridge Mill will stay open indefinitely. Rumours about Aldwarke Billet Mill closing are incorrect justified by the investment mentioned above. The Scunthorpe Billet Mill is however closing and billet production is being transferred to the new billet caster. The product range is different to that rolled at Aldwarke and Stocksbridge so there will be no product overlap. This has been known for some time now. JillieT
I am replying on behalf of Steven Briggs who is sitting right next to me : quote: basically I'd like to point out that they need to spend over 100 million over 5 years at Rotherham to make it capable of doing what Stocksbridge has been doing for millenia....and even Nick Craggs isn't stupid enough to throw good money after bad so unless your as thick as the rest of them Zepplin, with respect, or have a bottomless bank account, your information is slightly flawed unquote: I'm only the messager remember
Grandad.Malky
I work at Stocksbridge and the mill goes on ten shifts from Monday the rest of the billet bank working a mixture of 15/20 shifts, the word is that xmas is the crunch time. Will production continue with Rotherham mill on ten shifts and Stocksbridge mill on ten shifts or as something got to go , the word is Stocksbridge is gearing up for 15 shifts but your guess is as good as mine. boston
Thanks to all for the replies with regard to this. Would be a tragedy for Stocksbridge to lose this.
