I agree in principle for emergencies and stuff, but in practice, I think kids would abuse them, and be texting their mates/playing the Java games etc during lessons, which would upset the Teachers obviously.

If there was a strict rule regarding turning their phones off, or having them on silent during lessons, and only using them at break, it could work though.

TBH I think it is a little unnecessary, unless they are often doing things after school. If they generally just leave school and come home I am sure the school has a pay phone, this always worked for us as kids.

If they do alot of after school clubs, or go home with friends etc then it could be useful given the disappearing nature of public phone boxes.

The real problem (havign worked in schools) is that the phones very very rarely stay in bags and turned off during school hours. I have even witnessed a puipil's phone ring, take it out and answer it. When told to hang up she replied: 'Well I gotta talk to my mum'!. With the advent of phones as music players, cameras etc etc they create an incredible disrutption in many lessons.

As I say, as a safety measure then I have no real problem with them, but unfortunately my experience suggests that they become much more than that during the school day.

I don't think children should use mobile phones at all. If they are left turned off until there is a real emergency then I suppose this is OK, but what kind of emergency cold you really have where you coulcn't manage just as well without a phone. If they are being attacked then a rape alarm is much better as they wouldn't get chance to dial a number anyway. If they miss a bus or something then they can get another one. If you need to contact them because of an emergency you can call the school.

Schools I have worked in have had supposedly strict rules about this, but to confiscate the phone would often end up in a teacher wrestling with a child, and they know all to well that once its in a pocket or between their legs the teacher can't take it from them anyway.

I heard of a case in Barnsley when a kid used a mobile in what he would no doubt have considered an emergency.

He was in detention and the teacher tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.

Out popped the mobile: "Dad, he just assaulted me; call the solicitors!"
