carcrash
I think it is because it's halfway between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
Lestat
I think it is because it's halfway between Sheffield and Chesterfield. But in that case - everywhere would be called Halfway!

Heyesey
It's halfway between *Rotherham* and Chesterfield; there used to be a stagecoach stopping point there. And, yes, a lot of places did get called Halfway, when they were a stagecoach stopping-point half-way between two places. A search on google maps will uncover quite a few. MonkeyLover
Maybe it is halfway between Lands End and John O Groats? There is a sign at John O Groats that says Halfway ?????? miles (I cant remember the amount of miles)
redrobbo
No, it's halfway between Sheffield and Clowne. This discussion has been covered before - but I can't locate the thread. NB Midway in Derbyshire is similarly called because it is halfway between Burton-on-Trent (in Staffs) and Ashby-de-la-Zouch (in Leics).
Jabberwocky
Burton-on-Trent and Ashby-de-la-Zouch are close to me! Arent they lucky?
Heyesey
No, it's halfway between Sheffield and Clowne. This discussion has been covered before - but I can't locate the thread. It's not even ON the Sheffield-Clowne road, so that's hardly relevant.
Pilon
Also, someone worked out that it is halfway between the North Pole and Timbuktu. Someone with too much time on their hands...
